Une femme douce really is an amazing film and it is so alien to his previous movies that it almost feels like a science fiction film. I'd even pay money for a crappy DVD of it it is so ingeniously developed.

I'm rather hoping Macunaima gets the mainline release, complete with supplements, and de Andrade's other films get an Eclipse set. There's a Brazilian boxed set of his work, complete with said supplements, the same way there was a Belgian set of Akerman's 70s films, the contents of which were split between the mainline Jeanne Dielman and an Eclipse set.

I do as well, I was just going off of the "surprise" Eclipse with a delayed title that we knew about (where Macunaima comes in). I would just be shocked (in a good way) if there was a multiple filmmaker Cinema Novo Eclipse announced.

A set with these guys would be great:

Glauber Rocha
Nelson Pereira does Santos
Anselmo Duarte
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade
Ruy Guerra

or just a Glauber Rocha Eclipse set alone.

The best way to see these was the complete Bresson retrospective that was touring the rep theaters recently. Quatre nuits d'un rêveur is completely worth it if you can catch it.
If there's any truth to this, it's completely retarded. Both of these are Dostoevsky adaptations. Could there be more Bressonian source material? I suppose you could argue Dreamer is unBressonian on account of the fact that it's funny -- except that it's funny in an inimitably Bressonian fashion. Which is all the more reason to love it. Still, the rights tangle with Dreamer I'd always heard was more about a single asshole producer who hated the film and was grasping it tightly to his chest until he died. Ain't he dead yet?

I'm not sure if your story is accurate (this is the first I've heard it), but that producer is probably Gian Vittorio Baldi who is turning 82 the day before Halloween.

No one has guessed my Eclipse hint yet ... even though, after they announce it, it will seem kind of obvious.

I'm hoping it's Rossellini's History Films Vol. 2.

Ditto, but I think there are still rights issues there.

Maysles Bros docs mayhaps? orrrr maybe we finally get that Dziga Vertov Group eclipse set.

I'm holding out hope that 'long delayed' means a Mizoguchi extravaganza month, an early Mizo eclipse and Utamaro on the main line, upgrades to Sansho or Ugetsu. That'd be nice. My number one eclipse want is a massive 5 or 6 disc silent/early Ozu set that gets the rest of his pre-war films out on double feature discs ala the Naruse.

Kiarostami's Koker films? (Which I would prefer to see in the mainline, but perhaps materials aren't up to scratch.)

I guess my dreams of a five-disc box set (Bresson: The Color Films) are officially crushed.
That box set could never happen, because if it did I would have to rethink my burning hatred of living. :P

I guess:
Les Enfants Terribles
Le Samourai
Grey Gardens
Pasolini box set
On the Waterfront
Weekend
some IFC thing about which people will complain

Very long delayed... like how long delayed? Long as Autant-Lara's Sylvie et le fantôme or Duvivier's Le Golem, both of which show up in those old Janus catalogs....?

These better be mainline. If Criterion can do Close-Up justice I don't see how they are not able to create quality transfers for the Koker films??

I was the one who first blabbed about the Koker Trilogy thing and perhaps I should walk it back a little bit ... I later got the impression that, while Criterion was definitely pursuing them, they weren't very far along and perhaps all the rights aren't even secured. Sorry 'bout that. I'm hoping it'll happen, though.

I think they probably would - though that would be as good a time as any to start issuing Eclipse sets on both blu and DVD. Decent looking HD masters exist for all those movies, judging from how they're presented on Hulu.

Just to derail the conversation a bit - Eclipse discussion got me thinking about the Czech New Wave - has there been any timeframe discussed for what will likely be a main line release of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders?

Wow, if that film gets an Eclipse release instead of something Blu, I'm sure there'll be much outrage around here. MichaelB may faint. LQ won't talk to me for weeks even though I had no say in the decision.
