I'm going down on the 22nd for my second screening in 70mm... we should have a CF.org meetup there if there's enough folks from the mid-Atlantic that'd want to go at the same time. Or we could not do that at all!

By the way, for anyone going to the AFI Silver to see the film, please take note... "Evening and weekend shows presented in 70mm; weekday matinees presented in 35mm."

Living in Oakland, I never thought I would be walking distance from events like this and Napoleon. It would have seemed more likely that I'd be walking distance from something like this. Here's hoping my beautiful town keeps attracting stuff like this...
Thanks for the heads-up, mfunk9786.

Sounds like it's a tough film to parse -- one that will require several viewings and a set of Cliff's Notes. David Poland says, "This is probably PTA’s least accessible movie for general audiences. But it is also his most mature work as a filmmaker." Todd McCarthy, at The Hollywood Reporter, says "Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master is masterful for sure, as well as enthralling and perplexing. But an argument that will endure for as long as people feel like seeing and talking about the film is whether it adds up to the sum of its many brilliant parts." In Variety, Justin Chang writes, "even when the narrative drifts into increasingly ambiguous waters, the sheer brilliance of the filmmaking holds one rapt."

Still, great notices all around. Five stars apiece from Xan Brooks and Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian.

Robbie Collin, in his five-star review at The Telegraph says, "After one viewing, The Master already feels like a landmark American movie. It makes words like ‘bold’ and ‘extraordinary’ seem utterly inadequate."

Anyone have a line on any HD downloads of the trailers? The links on the film's Apple page have been re-directing me elsewhere for quite some time

Anyone know the story about this film's aspect ratio? Being 70mm I assumed 2:20 for large format and 4K, and 2.39 for 35mm, but the trailer being formatted 1.85, and some reviews seem to suggest the feature will be the same. Obviously it's not unprecedented, since Tati cropped to 1.85 for "Playtime," but still, can anyone confirm what AS they're showing this film in?

I believe one of the review a few pages back pegged it as 1.85 or thereabouts. It's certainly not scope.

I really hope this is a one-off for Paul, he does widescreen particularly well for someone this side of Leone.

Very interesting choice to crop 70mm to that extent. He didn't matte in camera like Tati however, since the photo of the camera neg being conformed clearly shows they shot the full aperture.

Though on the plus side, it should look freakin' amazing on blu-ray...with no letterboxing, they can really exploit the native res of the 65mm neg.

Still driving me bonkers there isn't a theatre within 4 or 5 hundred miles capable of showing a 70mm print. My best hope is that Ebertfest will pick the film for its lineup. I'd gladly drive from Missouri to Champaign to see it.

The Master will be playing at the Ziegfeld Theater in NYC in 70MM starting on 9/21 (probably for 2 weeks, according to the woman I spoke to on the phone!)

Gah, I called up the TIFF Lightbox today and they said as of right now it was "doubtful" it would have a post-festival run in 70MM. Now where the hell am I supposed to go

Shit. So either you pay about $20.00 or you are out of luck if it's already sold out (which it probably is). Great.

Not sure how this wouldn't be worth the $20

I would gladly pay $20, but I actually live about 2 hours from Toronto (and don't drive), so I was banking on what I thought would be a certainty since they're the only 70MM-capable cinema in Ontario

$20 is a lot if you never see films at festivals, but otherwise, that's a pretty standard price, and for a new film like this, in this format, it's a slam dunk.

Using those descriptions, I looked through the test cards and found each one that he was describing.
Much to my dismay.

Not only in 1080p, that NSFW clip can also be seen in 3D, with multiple 3D options. Interesting...

The Master isn't in the lineup for the London Film Festival, which surprises me greatly. This does make it a good bet for the surprise film on 20 October though!
