isn't the Mattei Affair a Paramount title? that's almost surely going to be a Criterion.

Any chance Criterion will be able to put together a Bigas Luna set? I never ordered the Tartan one while I had a chance and I think it would be awesome to see some of his works on HD (Jamon Jamon, The Tit and the Moon..)

Since I don't think they've been mentioned, I'll float Ugetsu & Sansho as other possibilities for a paired December blu-grade..

Any chance of Criterion putting Thomas Gunning´s excellent commentary (from the laserdisc) on an eventual Sansho Dayu Blu?

If they didn't put it on the DVD edition and used a different commentary instead, it seems unlikely that they'd put it on an eventual Blu-ray edition. Anything's possible, though.

Other than The Immortal Story, has anyone heard anything about Criterion releasing Orson Welles' lesser-known works (i.e. the shorts and made-for-TV stuff)? Due to the length of the unreleased films, they might even be able to fit one one Blu-Ray disc.

Much of this is being worked on by Edition Filmmuseum for their long-promised 'Unknown Orson Welles' set. Nobody else is going to get their hands on this particular treasure trove until that comes out. (One exception: the 'reconstructed' trailer for F for Fake, which MoC were allowed to include as an Easter Egg.)

EDIT: And if you've got an 'Unknown Orson Welles' set from Edition Filmmuseum, why would you need one from Criterion?

Blu-Ray for what was filmed on film (did Welles ever film his TV stuff on video?) but you are correct, if the Edition Filmmuseum release ever does come out. It's been in preparation for how long now?

I believe that was announced way back in 2009, and there's been no real evidence of a forthcoming release since then. Unfortunately, I would guess this was a planned title that was cancelled long ago.

As long as I've been watching their site, at least, which must be four or five years now.

(Just checked: the MoC F or Fake came out at the beginning of 2007, and it must have been in the works well before then.)

I strongly doubt that the project has been abandoned, since they actually hold all of the materials. It's more likely that the scope of the project keeps changing or the restoration work is more complicated / expensive than they anticipated.

I suspect the delay may be related more to logistics or legal issues. Virtually all of the Welles material the Munich Filmmuseum has in its archive has been edited and presented as short subjects at various festivals and retrospectives for years (THE DREAMERS presentation is especially good). I don't think there is much additional restoration that can be done, although with the advent of Blu-ray I imagine they would consider rescanning the 35mm and 16mm elements at a higher resolution to create HD versions of the presentations (I'm thinking the versions that are screened at festivals now are in SD). The 40-odd minute assembly of scenes from THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND would definitely be prevented from appearing on a home video release because of legal issues; perhaps some of the other holdings are in a similar legal limbo.

Regarding videotape: Welles was just beginning to experiment with shooting on video shortly before he died and he intended to do a version of KING LEAR where the close-ups would be shot on video then transferred to 35mm and establishing shots would originate on film. Welles prepared a promo short to interest investors in which he performed a brief excerpt as Lear. Apart from this, everything else Welles shot originated on 35mm or 16mm film.

Criterion tweeted a link to this collection of ten photos from There Will Be Blood

Probably just one set of film lovers spreading a good gallery of photos from a movie they love. But maybe something more?

The last two posts on the "Current" section of the website featured I Know Where I'm Going! and The Scarlet Empress. I know it probably means nothing, but I can dream about new Blu-ray editions, can't I?

I share your dream. I know Where I'm Going, if upgraded, should include the full length Edge of the World, given the added space of bluray.

I would rather they give it its own release given the quality of the film and the number of potential extra (see the BFI release for further illustration).

Well I think they should release a big box set of all the Dietrich/von Sternberg collaborations on blu, even though I know that won't happen, because seriously that would be amazing
