I'm glad people are already calling out the Schickel commentary. It's the beginning of the end.
I'm over exaggerating, but I'm sure Criterion editors are good enough to cut Schickel's moments where his comments don't go beyond "I like this scene".

It's an interesting film-- I first saw it as an undergrad on a VHS dub via ILL, so the Blu will certainly be a treat. Also, isn't this a surprise holding? Wonder if we'll get the rest of his work from this era in an Eclipse port with subs?swo17 wrote:Well I'm going to be a contrarian and say that I'm most excited for the Rouch...

I thought Icarus had the rights to some of his most well-known films, but then Icarus supposedly had Chronicle of a Summer as well.

Well, one out of eight is not so good. I would have bet anything that we were getting another Eclipse set this time around. Oh well, maybe next time.bamwc2 wrote:For no reason at all, I predict a big month:

It's the kind of film that age very well. It's a beautiful looking film too, great cinematography! Well done Criterion.

disappointing for only one upgrade and no eclipse, but overall positive with a nice slate of new releases and because the one upgrade is Sansho. Still, I hate when we go through a three month eclipse drought.
And I was hoping we'd get two or three upgrades like January.

Psyched about Chronicle of A Summer which I've been dying to see for a long time and will definitely blind buy. But that's it for me this month. Though I'm sorely tempted by the multiple aspect ratio presentation, I'm not sure I care enough about On the Waterfront. I don't know if I'd feel like even watching it once the whole way through again, let alone the three times in rapid succession it would take to get the full impact of the varying aspect ratios.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I too think On The Waterfront may be the lone non-buy from the new titles this month. Love to see these loaded packages, but I don't know that I care enough to warrant the higher price. I've never owned it previously, and it's not like it's not on TCM infrequently.
As for the Rouch, however, I hooted when I saw it and was slowly scrolling down praying it was to be accompanied by an Eclipse box of some of his better ethnographic films. I can't think of a cooler way to strengthen the very weak African presence in the Collection than with a box of his verite work, or even a choice or two from his "ethnofiction" work. A 4 or 5 disc collection w/ a dozen or more shorts would be incredible. I've been fascinated with him since seeing Mad Masters (? I think that's the title) in grad school 15 years ago and know he made dozens of others. Mad Masters would be a key choice for a set...anyone have ideas to go with it? is there a chance they have these?
ETA: I see from the above link Icarus is supposed to have rights to Mad Masters...any chance Criterion has sublicensed them?
