Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
When I press the audio-button, it just says 1ENG and I can not change it. I can get to the subtitles through display-button, but I have no power there.

It's not the AUDIO button. You sound to be close. Try again with the DISPLAY button.. go to where you see SUBTITLE... then select it and move to the right? Then you can toggle up and down? (I'm just trying to remember the rubbish Panasonic UI from memory, so bear with me!)

I'm with you here. It's just that that when I hit the display-button I can see the subtitles option but have no power over it. It stands as "Subtitle Off". Never happened to me before.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
k - I've checked my disc (UK StudioCanal Blu-ray).
The disc does have English subtitles. They're accessible by going to "AUDIO SETUP" (duh!) on the disc's menus and selecting the subtitles there.
The film then plays with subtitles on. However, when I then press the SUBTITLE button on my Sony remote to try and toggle them off or on, I get "This operation cannot be carried out on this disc." whilst the film is playing – which is ridiculous, rare, and a sign that the disc has been badly authored.
But the English subtitles ARE on there!

You are right. I managed to get the English subtitles on. Thanks very many for your effort.

Glad you got it working!
(Another inconsistent and poorly authored Blu-ray from StudioCanal, for those taking notes.)

Is this the same transfer on the US disc (a Lionsgate release)? I haven't watched my blu ray in full, but as I check it, it sure seems pretty healthy looking with nice, un-tampered with grain.peerpee wrote:Glad you got it working!

"AUDIO SETUP" for subtitles? And I get annoyed when a commentary is omitted from the EXTRAS / SPECIAL FEATURES menu and you have to track it down on AUDIO SETUP.peerpee wrote:k - I've checked my disc (UK StudioCanal Blu-ray).

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
I think the StudioCanal disc looks a little processed. It's not really grain, it's grain fighting with software. Not as bad as DON'T LOOK NOW or PEEPING TOM (both abortions) but with a slightly bitter taste of them.Drucker wrote:Is this the same transfer on the US disc (a Lionsgate release)? My Sight & Sound review, in which I said:
The Blu-ray transfer isn’t quite perfect, as there’s a faint but perceptible sheen of digital noise, but it’s mostly very satisfying indeed. The surround soundtrack has considerably more authority than many such remixes, having been supervised by Murch himself, but purists will be grateful for the inclusion of the mono original.

That's a good way of putting it! I don't know what it is, but it's mildly digital looking.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
Aspect ratio is slightly different as well for "The Conversation", US is at 1.78:1 slightly opened up on the top and bottom, the UK/German at 1.85:1.
The Bluray.com review gives the UK disc PQ slightly above the US release

I still can't decide if getting The Graduate blu-ray is worthwhile...or if I should hold out for a proper re-release. Can anyone comment on the quality of the studio canal disc? At least versus the MGM?

I emailed Studio Canal about The Wicker Man, and this was their reply:
There are currently plans to release The Wicker Man on Blu-ray later this year, but unfortunately no further information can be given at this time as the release has yet to be finalised.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
I thought at the new year that December will be the 40th anniversary of the release of the film and it would be a probable time for a Blu-ray release to get put out, so it's good to hear it's in the works! Looking forward to it.Cash Flagg wrote:I emailed Studio Canal about The Wicker Man, and this was their reply:

Not just the US release - the Monthly Film Bulletin confirms that the shorter cut played in British cinemas too.Stefan Andersson wrote:Restored to 100 mins., 15 mins. longer than the first double-bill MGM/US release.
So this may well be the world premiere of Seth Holt's original cut.

I see that the Blu-rays of Belle de Jour, Mépris and possibly Marienbad are OOP already on Amazon UK. Will they stay OOP?

They're not OOP. They often go long periods out of stock though.Stefan Andersson wrote:I see that the Blu-rays of Belle de Jour, Mépris and possibly Marienbad are OOP already on Amazon UK. Will they stay OOP?

Thanks for the fast reply, Calvin. Seems I was hasty and read an outdated product page. Some films have several pages. Good to know about long periods out of stock.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
Someone at StudioCanal UK didn't seem to check the back cover of "La Grande Illusion" before sending it out to the printers. Back cover claims:
Subtitle Tracks: French 1.1 dts-HD MA, German 1.1 dts-HD MA
Soundtrack: German, English
(and no, this release does not have a 1.1 audio track...)
