Someone mailed Absolut Medien about Out 1 and got a response giving some details about the preparations for the DVD.

Rights issues, access to existing masters (housed at WDR) and to an existing print of Out 1: Spectre (housed in Paris) have all been time-consuming. If I understood correctly they have to piece the film together from various sources.

Now they´re waiting to access the original Rivette introductions.

Subtitling apparently not finished yet.

Looking at the latest update of the description at the absolut medien site, you'll find that any mentioning of "Spectre" has disappeared. So it looks as if they couldn't sort out the rights for the shorter version. Dammit.

It's too bad about Spectre - I know a new 35mm print was (somewhat) recently struck from what I thought was the 16mm negative to play at the Rivette retrospectives a few years back. I'm guessing that's the one housed in Paris? In any event, I do remember Rosenbaum taking issue with the print for moving the intermission to a different point in the film, throwing off the symmetry in the film. Hopefully someone will untangle the rights one day.

Got an email from New Yorker about the Celine and Julie blu-ray. Pushed back to sometime in 2013.

That blu-ray was announced very prematurely. It was a mistake. It's still being pursued but should have never went out to the public at that point. I am confidant that when it does arrive, it will be excellent!

New Yorker used to have a few other favorite films of mine, including Cyclo, Angel Dust, Summer Vacation:1999 and...oh yeah! The Mother and the Whore. I wonder if they have any blu-ray plans beyond Celine & Julie?

Amazon release dates mean nothing. Whenever something is delayed with no new, official release date, they arbitrarily pick a date for it.

The latest from Germany is that the set will be featuring English subtitles for OUT 1 but only German subtitles for SPECTRE. Also, release date is set for "probably" May. I'll believe it when I see it but that's the latest.

That is great news. The subtitle issue with Spectre has to be contractual rather than practical, since subtitling the shorter film would be a doddle compared to the longer version. (Is Kino the sticking point here, like they were with the Metropolis region-locking fiasco?)

Why would Kino be a party to this? Theatrical rights? I thought if anybody was likely to release Out 1 in any form in the U.S. it would be Criterion?

I think all we know is that some majorish English-language distributor other than MoC contributed to the restoration and will presumably have release rights in the US or UK. It's probably most likely Criterion but no one can say for sure.
