Has there ever actually been a 'rumour' about this? I (and plenty of others) have speculated about such a set on the grounds of Criterion's access to Rossellini + common sense, but I don't recall anything from the horse's mouth about such a collection. So there would be no hypothetical clock running if it were just idle speculation from us.

You are absolutely right, the crooked horse never opened its mouth regarding such a set! That's why its a rumor! But, would love to have such a set (it will save some money, may be!)! If such box becomes a reality, probably not gonna happen soon, imo! After Shoah, I will be glad to have a Satyajit Ray box (whatever the films are) and the postponed set of Wenders films (Road Trilogy+ The American Friend), Wenders himself confirmed that set for a release during last summer...

I keep seeing this being mentioned as a possible future title from Criterion. It's a "cute" movie but for me seems a bit of an odd title for Criterion to work on, even if I have no doubt Fox would have no issue in licencing it off to someone else. Was this hinted at or mentioned somewhere?

I believe that originated due to his phantom page on Criterion's website. We know that Criterion has some more Fox titles, and that seemed like the most likely Nichols to be available to them. I suppose Primary Colors isn't out of the question either.

Are we sure that the Nichols film couldn't possibly be Silkwood, Catch 22, or Heartburn? All of them seem to be OOP...

Pardon my ignorance, but was that one of the 600 titles that Warner got distribution for? If so, I would say that pretty much kills its chances for being a CC release.
