Nope. I just thought that Peppermint Frappe would be more likely to show up here than in the mainline.ptatler wrote:Is this really a rumored thing?!bamwc2 wrote:Eclipse of Carlos Saura

Gap-Filling Ozu would be much more welcome than Kinoshita or more Kobayashi sets, which is what I expect.

Speaking of Criterion's Japanese Hulu releases, I'd love for more Shinoda on blu-ray, or even on Eclipse. That being said, I'm not holding my breath for anything in particular, as there's a pretty incredible collection of digital only releases--it'd just be nice if they threw us a bone with a new Japanese release in the mainline that's a bit off the beaten path.

The Shuji Terayama co-scripted Shinoda's would make a good eclipse, Tears on the Lion's Mane (aka A Flame at the Pier) is one of my favourite Japanese films.

In a more serious vein, having just learned that TT does not have Tootsie and there is a German Blu coming out, I would bet that this ended up in the batch that was licensed to CC so we would get their supplements plus the DVD ones, an ideal arrangement!

Not sure if I should read into Criterion having scenes from some of their films in 1080p on their youtube channel. Red Balloon, Hiroshima and others are among those I've seen so far...

I'd die of disappointment if we got no Blus for the Dreyers.

Just saw a Wall Street Journal segment on films booed at Cannes and they showed a clip of Cronenberg's Crash with a credit to CC.

IMO they've got to get some more Ozus on blu.. And I think there's a backlog of Italian cinema to get on blu- more Pasolini (the MoC ones), Antonioni's trilogy, the Rossellini/Bergman films are starting to trickle through the home and theatrical circuits..

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Tokyo Story and some other Ozu films have freshly made restoration ready for CC to license. While it would be nice to see a domestic blu-ray release almost concurrent with the Japanese debut, they really ought to take the time and do a Seven Samurai style re-issue, if they want to do it justice and create the best edition worldwide, at least for Tokyo Story.

Most everything else is just credited to Cine-Tamaris (or Sony for Model Shop - probably also licensed by Criterion). I suppose we'll have to wait until the official Janus announcement before we find out completely what all they have (hope its everything - but if that's it, they certainly got the best of the lot, though Young Girls of Rochefort would be nice as well). Actually, Young Girls of Rochefort says the permission comes from Cine-Tamaris, nothing about StudioCanal/Lionsgate :-k
Also, I think its a given that Criterion will release the ITV-owned Silent 9 Hitchcock titles, thus:
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1926)
The Pleasure Garden (1926)
Downhill (1927)
Easy Virtue (1927)

I can't see Passion of Joan of Arc coming out on Criterion any time soon - they'll almost certainly be working from the Gaumont restoration, which will of course require it to be finished first. (Has it even been started?)bamwc2 wrote:I'll go with two old standbys: Passion of Joan of Arc and Summertime.
A gorgeous HD master of this already exists, as the Arrow Academy release proves, so this wouldn't be a huge challenge - assuming they still have the rights.BillWatkins wrote:Rififi (upgrade)

I'm sure it'll eventually come, but didn't the theatrical release of this just get announced? Surely a BD would follow that, no?ShellOilJunior wrote:Hiroshima mom amour (Resnais)

I wasn't aware that Gaumont was working on a restoration. I thought that they might use the MOC transfer.MichaelB wrote: I can't see Passion of Joan of Arc coming out on Criterion any time soon - they'll almost certainly be working from the Gaumont restoration, which will of course require it to be finished first.
