The rumour was that Criterion had the rights to (or were at least interested in) Out 1 itself, but that Kino had the rights to Spectre. I don't think anything was ever confirmed, but the different situation regarding subtitles for each version suggests different contractual / licensing situations for each version, which fits. And we know that Kino can be aggressive about ensuring licensors in other territories 'play by the rules', even when they don't do so themselves.

that makes sense, though would Kino release SPECTRE by itself?

Wasn't the Criterion part more than just a rumor?

That's nearly four years ago, and things change (there are lots of past examples of releases that had much more definite confirmation than this but which never happened and were ultimately de-confirmed), but I'm sure we're all hoping that this is something that hasn't!

True, but it seems like Criterion have been more cautious with regards to keeping quiet about unconfirmed things since the dawn of the face/twit age, so I'm tempted to take anything that actually has slipped out of them as recently as that as gospel!

To be fair, Metropolis was the only time this was ever an issue and I believe Nick said it was all resolved amicably.

Well, it's only the first part of that characterization that pertains to the current situation. The second part was a bonus feature.

I wonder if this will make it to Boston? (My favorite Rivette films -- ever since I first encountered it via the unsubbed French VHS release).

So does this mean we'll probably get an interlaced standard def release of this with fixed English subs in the U.S. via Olive Films in a about a year? Better than nothing, of course.

It's not from New Yorker, it's from The Film Desk (stated clearly at the bottom of the page).

Film Desk only does theatrical though, don't they? I don't think they have a home video presence.

Ah, Film Desk! Jake Perlin's with them, right? I remember when he used to program for BAM - he occasionally pops up to moderate the Q&A's for the Film Desk's releases. They don't do home video distribution, but would it be the logical next step for them?

It is run by Jake Perlin and they don't do home video. Their website shows their catalog. Their catalog has been distributed by a number of home video companies.

update from absolute medien:

5 x DVD 9, codefree, PAL, Farbe, 4:3

745 Min. (NOLI ME TANGERE), 253 Min. (SPECTRE)

Mono, Sprache: Französisch, Untertitel: Deutsch (NOLI ME TANGERE, SPECTRE), Englisch (NOLI ME TANGERE)

as per my previous comment, OUT 1 will have english subtitles but SPECTRE will not.

The only thing that makes me hesitate is that neither your link nor the one at Amazon Germany says anything about English subtitles on either version of the film. You posted the info from the distributor above. Is there any reason to suspect they won't be on the release of the Noli Me Tangere cut? Is there a pic of the back of the DVD box anywhere?

Like I quoted above, the company making the set, Absolut Medien, says there is English on OUT 1 but not on SPECTRE. I'd take their word over Amazon.

Edit: I see that ARTE, who are co-producers, are not listing English. It's still hard to know why Absolut Medien would lie about that.

Here's the Absolut Medien link, which does indeed list English subtitles on the long cut, like you've been saying.

English subtitles are listed at JPC.de, where the box is also significantly cheaper right now than at Arte or Amazon.

Thanks for that. I've ordered it and I'll let you know if it definitely has English subs on the extended version.
