I am thinking in buying the DVD “OUT 1: Noli me tangere / Spectre”, but I still have a doubt regarding this edition: it is correct that only the movie “OUT 1: Noli me tangere” will have english subtitles (and so, that “OUT 1: Spectre” will not have English subtitles)?

My doubt comes mainly from the fact that Arte and Amazon do not list any English subtitles at all:

This is correct.

I will inform ARTE Edition to change the information on their website. As for the Amazon listing, we, unfortunately, have no possibility to differentiate between the long version (German and English subs) and the “short” version (only German subs). So, listing English subs is not entirely correct.

Well, I hold it in my hand!!

A nice box set with five slimcases plus an extensive booklet in German only. The subs are white and thankfully not too big. The source is a digital broadcast master by WDR, non-HD and not cleaned up, unfortunately. Both versions have a lot of speckles etc. for which the makers of this edition apologise in the booklet. Otherwise, it looks really fine for a film shot on 16mm, and who would complain given that the damn thing is now finally available at all? Still, this of course leaves room for improvement should CC ever get their act together and release it. In the meantime, let's celebrate this set!

Just bought it off German Amazon for 49 Euros including shipping (postage to Australia). One of those odd things in which the final price is much lower than you expect once you reach the checkout. That other site charged 45 euros plus 14 for shipping out here, so I'd probably avoid that for now (unless you live in Germany).

Can't wait to watch it.

Yes, amazon has lowered their price now to (almost) match jpc's. So for foreign customers it's indeed the better option to order from amazon now.

Any word on the extras? Did I read right (my German is bad) that there is a thing where Rivette talks about the film? And subtitles on the extras?

Yes, there are seven short pieces with Rivette, originally shown as introductions to the 1990 TV premiere, lasting between four and eight minutes each. These are split over the four discs of "Noli me tangere" and have only German subs. Same for the 20 min. documentary from the 1970s that is also on disc 4.

I ordered this from Amazon. It shipped, but I am told it will take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive in US! I don't know what kind of logistical system they use if it takes that long to deliver. I would not order from them again.

The box contains 5 slim cases: 4 for Out 1 Noli me tangere (at the top of the photo), and 1 for Out 1 Spectre (middle below).



The Noli me tangere-covers have a synopsis of each episode printed on the outside. The covers are reversible though, with a more conventional design on the inside (like the Spectre cover).

Bonus material: The 7 Rivette interviews (c. 38 mins. in total) have optional German subs and an optional German audio track. The remaining bonus feature (20 min.) has an original French/German audio track plus a German audio option. Some segments of this bonus features have original German audio, so it's not 100 percent French-friendly! None of the bonus features are English friendly.

I can't do screencaps at the moment, but the image quality of Out is pretty great, as long as your expectations are realistic for it (16mm, its long history of unavailability, etc.). The quality of Spectre however is considerably weaker (lots of speckless, faded color & contrast...), but quite watchable. The extras are really nice.
Now, I realize I shouldn't nitpick about a quality release of this/these film(s), but the first disc of the long version (episodes 1 & 2) is a little problematic:
The second episode looks a little murkier than the rest and is kinda yellow (maybe these are related?; end credits are actually yellow).
But, and this is the main problem, the first episode is vertically stretched. It's nothing too drastic, maybe it's just me, but if someone else could check their copy I'd be grateful.

As I suspected, the stretching on Episode 1 comes from cropping at the top and bottom (there's less headspace and the framing seems too tight compared to the rest of episodes).

No. I think you forgot to resize the captures from the native PAL resolution (720x576) to the display resolution (720x540 in this case). They look much better after the adjustment.

EDIT: Upon closer examination, it does seem the first episode of Out 1 is stretched even after resizing. The rest look normal though.
