Did I miss when we knew the Warner deal would be a recurring thing?

I think Freaks has enough cult value that Warner will keep it, but to MoC they already lent Ruggles of Red Gap and I could see Crit getting it..

Ruggles was Universal.

I thought Ruggles was Paramount?

edit: looks like I was wrong!

WB just released a Jan Troell film to the archives, it would have struck me as a very criterion esque 'rediscovery'

La notte should definitely be coming this year, as confirmed by Criterion through email.

L'Avventura and L'Eclisse have different licensors, making a box set unlikely; though we may get upgrades of those two in the same month.

Anyway, I predict a Warner title in the next announcement.
I wouldn't be so sure one will come out next month, but I do think we can anticipate at least 1 more WB title before we get the 2-disc special edition The Devils in Oct. 2014. I'm hoping for:

1. Akira Kursoawa's Dreams
2. True Stories (+ out takes or Spalding's episode in PBS' Trying Times series)
3. Home Of The Brave: A Film By Laurie Anderson (+ other performances circa United States I - IV)
4. The Loved One (theatrical + road show version)
5. After Hours
6. Once Upon A Time In America (both cuts)
7. Death In Venice
8. Cruising (both cuts + documentary on Vito Russo & gay protests over film)
9. Day For Night
10. Look Back In Anger
11. Another Ken Russell title (or perhaps a twofer)

Less Likely, but probably not coming out on a WB blu-ray any time soon:
A Warner's Jazz Trilogy box: Bird/Straight No Chaser/Round Midnight
A complete & restored Val Lewton box
A complete & restored Busby Berkeley box
Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf
Othello (1965)
A Face In The Crowd
Blow-Up
Baby Doll
Klute
The Candidate
Pink Floyd's The Wall
Local Hero
All That Jazz
The Killing Fields
Zelig
America, America

I'm pretty sure that the gangster, noir, Crawford, & Davis titles are a no-go, as they were rather popular boxes.

They Shoot Horses is ABC, have they gotten anything back from them? (after losing Straw Dogs and the Hitchcocks)

Is this a wishful thinking on your part or you possess some info i'm not aware of?

Btw, All That Jazz is with Fox, and Zelig is MGM.

Warner titles, which I believe, will be issued by Criterion:

Scarecrow
The Magnificent Ambersons
Any of their foreign titles (Blow-up, The New Land, The Emigrants, Day for Night, Dreams, etc.)
The Fearless Vampire Killers
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Dead Ringers

There's a killer HD broadcast copy of this doing the rounds which restores the original '57 precredit opening with a wide shot from above of a deserted, darkened soundstage into which Hitch enters, and introduces the film telling us the picture has been taken from a true story. This opening hasn't been around for decades which suggests this very nice restoration of the title is imminent for release.
David, I'm pretty sure that opening is on the Warner R1 DVD, and it has been shown on American TV for years. Has it really been unavailable in Australia all this time?

I saw a screening of this last month with Friedkin in person and he basically said, upon questioning, that there is no "other cut". The extra hour or so of missing footage was really just "pornography" (his words) that was never really intended to see the light of day but instead was used as fuel for his rebellious push of the movie. He told us that he has no idea where the cut stuff is, nor does WB, and neither party has any interest in hunting for it (if it still exists).

The Cremator is supposed to be coming in the third Czech New Wave Eclipse set. Though it is of course totally worthy of mainline treatment.

Sadly Criterion has never really done a horror themed October. Maybe one release at most.

It was ages ago, but Sisters and Kwaidan were both released in October 2000. I believe the DVD of The Blob was also scheduled to come out in October but got delayed until November.

Criterion did release Ambersons...on laserdisc back in the old days of thoses giant discs. Glad i still have them but i do wish Criterion will have the rights to do a blu-ray release with a commentary and extras.
