All indications are that it was added willingly by Lynch as a favor or obligation to the actress. Unless they "remaster" the blur in Hi-Def, I imagine it would remain just the same.duck duck wrote:Fine I'll be the one who sounds like a perve. Would a Criterion Blu of Mulholland have the digital blur that was on the DVD? I understand the reason for it and it's not a problem on DVD but with bigger screens with higher definition it may be distracting.

It was definitely Lynch's choice. I imagine that they'll let him do whatever he wants with the release. If he still wants it there, it'll be there. If he wants the blur gone, it'll be gone.

They tweeted the Revenge of the Nerds trailer because Orson Welles did the voice over.bamwc2 wrote:Huh? When did they post anything on this? Now they've posted that Mulholland Drive picture to their Facebook page. I think it's really happening. \:D/

I hope they get Kellerhouse to work on the artwork for these Lynch releases.eerik wrote:Now they've posted that Mulholland Drive picture to their Facebook page. I think it's really happening. \:D/

Yeah, it would be hard to believe that they were not aware of blu-ray.com's website post & the subsequent reaction. Following it up with a post of the same image on their facebook page 2 days later does seem a lot like a confirmation.

I'd vote for the latter. If I were them, I'd want to have a bit of fun with all the internet speculation too.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Now both available in HD on iTunes. An October release seems likely. Paired spines or boxed with Shivers, Rabid and the shorts?

Maybe paired spines but with Rabid as a supplement on one, Shivers on the other? The runtimes for all 4 films are around 90 minutes each so space wouldn't be an issue, though I'm not sure if Criterion or Cronenberg would be OK with the two earlier films being denoted as extras. Either that or we won't see them at all. Really can't see them locking something like Scanners into a $120 box set.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I don't know about Cronenberg, but I'd much rather see Shivers & Rabid get there own releases, than be relegated to extras. I find them to be just as good, if not more enjoyable films, than the other two - due to their raw energy. Especially with regard to Shivers.
But by all means, if the double bill approach meant we got all four on blu-ray from Criterion, I'd be more than happy to go with that. All four films are truly begging for a really decent release that they just haven't received up until now (discounting, of course, the Second Sight releases).

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'd be perfectly happy with a 3-4 disc "Early Cronenberg" style box set, but as I said I think Criterion would be mad to make Scanners exclusive to an expensive box set. I was surprised enough when they did it with Brief Encounter. I suppose they could release all 4 films individually as well as in a box set, but they haven't done that for a long time.
To be honest though, I think the most likely scenario is that Criterion never picked them up and we won't be getting them at all. If they did have them, why aren't they up on iTunes with the others?

First off, anyone who says that Shivers or Rabid isn't deserving of individual spines is talking nonsense. Second, elsewhere on the board someone posted that another company got the rights to those two (I can't remember where or whom, but it might even be a few pages back in this thread). Who ever releases them, its probably not going to be Criterion.

No one actually said this.
Lionsgate has Shivers, but they've licensed titles to Criterion before, in one case so they could complete a box set (Qatsi Trilogy). Rabid is with "Somerville House", who are mainly a tv/cable distributor. They've released some of their films on DVD (Rabid and Black Christmas, for example), but none on Blu-ray. They presumably licensed Black Christmas to Koch Entertainment for their Blu-ray release, so I doubt there's a reason they wouldn't do the same if Criterion wanted to licence Rabid.bamwc2 wrote:Second, elsewhere on the board someone posted that another company got the rights to those two (I can't remember where or whom, but it might even be a few pages back in this thread). I haven't been following the thread, so apologies if this has been recently discussed, but have there been any rumblings from CC about a BD release of L'avventura or The Bicycle Thief? I know these equate non-adventurous canon to most of you, but I'm curious.

I think this scenario is much more likely with his first two features as the supplements. They're much less able to support standalone releases.EddieLarkin wrote:Maybe paired spines but with Rabid as a supplement on one, Shivers on the other? Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
A new restoration of L'Avventura is currently being distributed theatrically by Janus Films, so it's probably just a matter of months until that shows up as a BD/DVD upgrade (if you go by the timetable of the Janus theatrical re-releases of Safety Last, the Pierre Etaix films, and Journey to Italy.aox wrote:I haven't been following the thread, so apologies if this has been recently discussed, but have there been any rumblings from CC about a BD release of L'avventura or The Bicycle Thief? I'm surprised that Criterion hasn't already upgraded Bicycle Thieves to BD, but I assume the transfer they used for the 2007 DVD edition is not quite up to snuff for BD.

The former recently had a restoration appear and should be upgraded within a year or two.aox wrote:I haven't been following the thread, so apologies if this has been recently discussed, but have there been any rumblings from CC about a BD release of L'avventura or The Bicycle Thief? I assume you mean the shorts because the first two features already have in print American blu releases.zedz wrote: I think this scenario is much more likely with his first two features as the supplements. They're much less able to support standalone releases.

Are the rumours of a L'avventura/La Notte/L'eclisse boxset just speculation, or was there any suggestion that Criterion would release (and re-release, in the case of L'eclisse) the other two films along with the forthcoming L'avventura upgrade?

Wow, I never would have imagined the trilogy being released together. I feel greedy just thinking it as I have accepted over the years that it wouldn't happen.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Just to clarify - on February 14 in this thread someone posted a message from Mulvaney saying that La Notte was on the schedule for 2013. (Of course, that doesn't mean it will actually come out in 2013.) So I think the only one we haven't heard anything about is L'eclisse.

zedz was referring to Cronenberg's first two features*, no? Rabid and Shivers do not have any Blu-ray releases anywhere in the world, as far as I know.knives wrote:I assume you mean the shorts because the first two features already have in print American blu releases.zedz wrote: I think this scenario is much more likely with his first two features as the supplements. *Shivers and Rabid weren't actually Cronenberg's first features but I believe that's what we're discussing here!
edit: actually I now realise zedz was referring to Cronenberg's actual first two features, Stereo and Crimes of the Future. But I don't believe they have Blu-ray releases either?

I didn't even know Fast Company was available! I'll pick it up soon if it has those two as well. That does indeed nix any chance of Criterion including them as supplements too, I suppose.Matt wrote:They're on the Blue Underground BD of Fast Company, but in SD.EddieLarkin wrote:edit: actually I now realise zedz was referring to Cronenberg's actual first two features, Stereo and Crimes of the Future.
