I was thinking the same thing -- though if Liv & Ingmar is used as a supplement for Persona, I wonder if they would really include three feature-length documentaries with a single film?Bando wrote:Seems to me one of the Fårö Document films (or both!) could pair quite nicely as a supplement to Persona...
Perhaps Liv & Ingmar will be included with Persona, and the two Fårö films paired as a separate release.

Persona is such a standard-bearer in the history of art house cinema that I could really see them pulling out all the stops on their release. So, actually, yeah, maybe

Any chance of "Witchcraft Through The Ages" for the October releases? It would make up for what has been a pretty lacklustre trickling of silent works onto Blu at this point.

I agree. There aren't many films of that standing left for them to pull out of their hats, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they came over all Seven Samurai.domino harvey wrote:Persona is such a standard-bearer in the history of art house cinema that I could really see them pulling out all the stops on their release. I am now contractually obligated to link the SCTV Whispers of the Wolf sketch for the umpteenth time and insist that it appear on the Persona set.

Re: Criterion on Hulu
No need for me to link, Jeff as I've had that segment on tape (and now DVD) since it originally aired back in, what '81 or '82? Absolutely essential SCTV and YES we did show it before PERSONA in the early days of our screening room.
"OK kids, the Count made a big mistake. It wasn't really a scarey movie. But it was depressing. And that's even worse!"
It belongs with PERSONA just as DER DOVE should be paired with SEVENTH SEAL!

Is it certain they'll do an Antonioni boxset as opposed to individual releases? Wouldn't there have been a Janus theatrical run of L'Eclisse and La Notte, as well? L'Avventura just seems like too much of a standard-bearer not to be made available as a stand-alone.

True, but there are several films that lack that sort of stature simply by virtue of having been in rights hell for years. Think Los Olvidados or The Mother and the Whore.zedz wrote:I agree. Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Speaking of Los Olvidados, it's about to play (for a whopping one screening, one day) in Nashville. Years ago I remember trying to track down a 35mm print and the rights owner and got nowhere, and now it's just arrived on my doorstep. Any idea where it's coming from?
One of my hopes for the collection is that it one day features some of Bunuel's Mexican works in the restored, high definition versions they deserve. But then, I'm naive like that.

Too early for Antonioni. I wouldn't be surprised if we had to wait until February for that.

Again, why are people so sure the L'Avventura upgrade won't just be a stand-alone? I find it highly unlikely a film of that stature would only be available in a set.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Because we also know that La notte is coming, because L'eclisse is of at least the same stature, and because the three films are commonly considered together. Pricewise, this will likely mean that you can buy all three films for $80 MSRP instead of $120. Also remember what they did with Journey to Italy.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
True, but Journey to Italy is a far less popular film than L'Avventura even if it's almost as highly acclaimed by critics. With that said, they might not even have plans to upgrade L'Eclisse at the moment for all we know, and we could just get releases of La Notte and L'Avventura in the same month like they did with Satyajit Ray. Of course, there's the off chance they'll release a set but also make the films available individually like they did with the John Cassavetes set.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Anybody know the current status of available film materials for L'eclisse? I love the film but the old Criterion disc has maybe the worst flicker I've seen on any transfer in the whole collection. Since L'eclisse also seems to be the least well-known and least popular entry in the trilogy is there any good reason to believe (like screenings of new prints at festivals) it's ready for Blu?swo17 wrote:Because we also know that La notte is coming, because L'eclisse is of at least the same stature...

Yea, Criterion released Godard's Weekend well over a year after Janus did its theatrical run, so we'll see.knives wrote:Too early for Antonioni. I wouldn't be surprised if we had to wait until February for that.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Also, Stromboli and Europa 51 are fairly obscure films at least in comparison to La Notte to L'Eclisse. It was probably a combination of them lacking the proper elements and of their not being a large enough market to merit releasing the Rossellini films individually. In the case of Antonioni, however, the market is there. There's certainly a market for stand-alone blu-ray releases of each of the three Antonioni films.swo17 wrote:Because we also know that La notte is coming, because L'eclisse is of at least the same stature, and because the three films are commonly considered together. L'Avventura's just one of those films. There's before L'Avventura and after L'Avventura. Now of course, if you asked Rivette he might say the same thing about Journey to Italy, so who knows?

I like this set of predictions. Normally I wouldn't predict a full horror slate for October, but since Scanners, Eraserhead, and I Married a Witch (not really horror, I know, but a perfect Halloween release) have all been officially hinted for this year and we know The Brood is forthcoming, it seems more likely than usual.
