Good find, hoggle. It still blows my mind that they've hired a different artist for every film.

The promising thing about that rejected drawing is that it's clearly DVD/Blu-ray shaped and not square/oblong, which gives me further hope that this won't end up being a coffee table book release with fucking slots. Fingers crossed, gang

Fucking slots? They should have one of those if they ever release Taxi Zum Klo.domino harvey wrote:...gives me further hope that this won't end up being a coffee table book release with fucking slots.

What comics has Skillman done?hoggle wrote:It does look like each film will receive art by a different artist, and that the artists will be mainly those who work in comics. Eric Skillman works in comics himself and seems to be bringing in more and more cartoonists for Criterion designs. Well, not sure if he was actually the AD on all of the releases, but the collection has had Seth, Jordan Crane, Adrian Tomine, Daniel Clowes and so on, all very recently.

I don't know if this has been presented as an alternate theory for these yet, but it is entirely possible that these Zatoichi illustrations are for All Tomorrow's Parties, and maybe Criterion is planning on screening the films there this fall.

That's a good guess, Ryan, but I think Criterion only worked with ATP for the US events. Unfortunately, there will be no ATP in the US this year.
As a big fan of the festival, this was a major bummer for me.

He has also designed a few books. More details can be found at his blog (which he hasn't posted on since last November) or his twitter account

Polly Guo: "an unused illustration for a Zatoichi film series boxset for the Criterion Collection"

The reference to Criterion has been deleted from that Polly Guo post. I imagine that happened shortly after hoggle linked to it. (I really hope none of the artists get in trouble for their Zatoichi posts)

Criterion has this coming, so perhaps will be recording this for the disc which would put the release likely early '14

Moe D. seems to have an in with someone at Criterion, who so far has leaked forthcoming releases of Mad World (now semi-confirmed), Tootsie, and now this. Though he may not have an in for much longer if he keeps spilling the beans!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Anything they ever put out on LD always seems like a good bet if they can get their hands on it. See also Tootsie. Maybe a little OCD streak in Becker or Turell. If they ever try to re-do Waltz of the Toreadors I may be down for an intervention.domino harvey wrote:Since when are Criterion releasing the Big Chill?

Seeing as we're finally getting a Criterion Eraserhead this year (I think), maybe Becker and Turell will be inspired to go after another Laserdisc release that got away and talk Rob Reiner and Aaron Sorkin into finishing their "A Few Good Men" special edition.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Really curious as to how Criterion is going to release the Zatoichi films. 1 by 1? A huge boxset? Mini boxsets?
I enjoy the films, but I don't love them enough to rebuy them all. The only ones I'm really interested in are the first two (as they were not anamorphic) and the one that has never hit the R1 market. The 14th film I believe?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
My guess: 9 disc more or less barebones BD set of all 26 films announced for December, MSRP of $299.95. Perhaps individual releases of a few of the more key films a couple years down the line.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'll bet that happens. There may have been a cheaper CLV version, but wasnt that a $100 CAV criterion box set with a bunch of extras? I saw it years ago, I seem to remember Cleese on one of the extras in his sherrif's outfit doing the "and now for something completely different" joke. Or just possibly I'm insane.cdnchris wrote:And when can we expect Silverado?

It'll be a boxset, as stated in Polly Guo's (now deleted) message.Vegeta84 wrote:Really curious as to how Criterion is going to release the Zatoichi films. 1 by 1? A huge boxset? Mini boxsets?

Here's an update on Ricardo Venâncio's piece.
Searching "zatoichi" on Tumblr has yielded another artist, Yuko Shimizu:

"Pretty happy with the likeness. #勝新太郎 #shintarokatsu #zatoichi #座頭市 sorry I cannot show more than this till this comes out…"

Probably just one spine number like Pierre Etaix. Or none like AK100.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's going to be a giant set on DVD and BD.swo17 wrote:My guess: 9 disc more or less barebones BD set of all 26 films announced for December, MSRP of $299.95. Perhaps individual releases of a few of the more key films a couple years down the line.

They could do a spine number per disc plus one for the box, as with the Paul Robeson set. Who knows, in this crazy mixed up world of ours.swo17 wrote:Probably just one spine number like Pierre Etaix. Or none like AK100.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Actually, there are only 18 of the films up on Hulu, all from the '60s, so maybe we just get those in a 6-disc set retailing for $199.95 and called "Zatoichi's Blind Sixties" or something.swo17 wrote:My guess: 9 disc more or less barebones BD set of all 26 films announced for December, MSRP of $299.95.
