I completely agree, though I tend to find his overly conversational hipster style a little disconcerting at times.

Indeed. Annoyingly bought the DVD only a few days ago since I'm going through what Mamoulian is available to me (very rewarding already and I haven't even touched Applause, City Streets, Love Me Tonight, or Queen Christina!), but it's a good candidate for double dipping given that gorgeous Karl Struss photography. Still cannot get over the fact that I've been mispronouncing Jekyll my entire life.

The Mamoulian is a surprise to me, as I assume it's still owned by Warner. But I did wonder about a Kino-Warner arrangement when they were able to reissue the Stroheim documentary with all the Warner-owned clips intact this time. Would it be too much to hope Warner might license their unreleased silents to Kino, if The Big Parade doesn't sell well enough for them to continue themselves?

It's the Barrymoore version, I'm fairly confident of that.

All fantastic news... If Kino could get their mitts on a 2k scan of City Streets someplace, and upgrade their already utterly fantastic releases w/Universal of Love Me Tonight and the mind boggling Applause, and release all of this w Dr J & Mr H in a Rouben Mamoulian, Early Sound Master box set or something like that . . . it would be sublime. It's a shame that this man's early run of films fly so low on the radar of most home vid companies. If it weren't for Kino's dvd, I would never have even heard of Applause, which knocked me completely and totally for a loop. Has this film been released anywhere else in the world by any other label? It's only one of the most mind boggling "big studio" cinematic debuts in history.

@John Doe, where did you get the info from that said it's the 1931 version?

Are they really re-releasing The Blue Angel the way they should have done it in the first place in the same year? What a slap in the face to those who bought the first release. Shame on me, I guess.

Yeah, I'm a little irritated by the Blue Angel do-over, too.. And no 'Nostalghia'! But so it goes..

Kino acquires Bruno Dumont's Camille Claudel 1915. Tentative woo-hoo, so long as they eventually release it on Blu.

Looks fabulous! Some of the more prominent forum members may not like the film but I'm thrilled to see it in this good condition.

Well I'm not one of those people. I knew this could look better than the existing DVD transfers because of the TCM broadcast, but this release looks like it will far surpass even that.

As far as I know, I'm the only one who doesn't like it here (or at least the only one foolish enough to say so outloud)

DVDBeaver review of The Stranger is up. WOW!

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_ ... lu-ray.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Great-looking transfer and an equally great poetic review by Tooze:

"Praise be to Kino! The HD Cinema Classics disc is a coaster. I await winter so I can hurtle it into a snow bank before urinating on it."

I thought you were joking before I looked at the review and saw that it was an actual quote. What a strange person this Gary Tooze is... And one might ask: why winter? I mean the urinating should be enough on plain grass.

Isn't Gary Canadian? That would explain the reference to snow/winter

As it happens, GT are the most pleasing letters to spell out in urine.

Aside: one time I came home from school and I had to urinate so bad that there was no time to get inside so I wrote my name in the snow in cursive which is obviously easier but nobody says that.

I wonder how much money Kino (or Olive) saves by not including English subtitles? Is it substantial amount? They lose some potential customers like me.
