Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I just watched the MoC La Notte, which got me thinking about the CC version and their supplement about the role of the architecture in the film. I am going to make an assumption that the building in the NYD wacky drawing was for La Notte.

I just realized we're almost to spine #700. I bet they're saving the Lynch films for that.

Because if there's one thing they're consistent with, it's that they save their "big" spine numbers for really heavy hitter, iconic releases.rwiggum wrote:I just realized we're almost to spine #700. I bet they're saving the Lynch films for that.

Obviously if any film deserves a "respectable" spine number, it's [...]Mad Mad World

I'm not gonna make any predictions for 2014, but I'm gonna guess that Y Tu Mama Tambien will be in the New Years Drawing.

I feel like if I say "4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days" and "Beyond the Hills" enough times, it'll happen.ianungstad wrote:Any predictions for 2014 in general?
So I predict "4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days" and "Beyond the Hills." Also a blu upgrade of Cranes Are Flying.
Please.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Now that it's been semi-confirmed that Criterion likes to wait for something to sell out before releasing an upgrade, I wonder if the "running low" section of the sale website would indicate what could be up next on the upgrade slate. Currently, the eligeable titles they are listing are The Killers, Red Beard, and Rossellini's War Trilogy.
EDIT: Throne of Blood's on the list now too

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I don't know whether Criterion's own stocks at the time of a sale actually bear any relation to how many copies of a title are still unsold, but of those three I'd think only Red Beard is likely. For The Killers, they're beholden to studio restoration priorities, for two different films, so it'll be a pure fluke if those priorities all line up (and I can't imagine the made-for-TV Siegel version will be top of their list), and the elements were a major issue with the War Trilogy. If they'd been strong enough this would definitely have been Blu on release, so I expect any upgrade will have to wait until the next wave of restoration. Though if the Bergman set is a massive hit, they might move Heaven and Earth to make it happen.
EDIT: The added Throne of Blood is the most likely upgrade of all, in my opinion.

Isn't Arrow releasing a blu of the Siegel Killers next year? That would imply that there's a restoration already available...

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'd bet that Criterion's stock is in multiple different warehouses and that most of the remaining stock of DVDs is not at the warehouse in Kentucky or wherever certain amounts of inventory are at the ready to fulfill Criterion.com orders. Case in point, the Early Fassbinder set is now "running low" but that probably doesn't mean they need to order another pressing of it already.

In Patrick Mcgilligan's 2011 book Nicholas Ray: The Glorious Failure of an American Director he stated that Criterion had plans for special editions of several Ray films. I noticed that Film Foundation restorations of The Lusty Men and They Live By Night are premiering at NYFF this week. I wonder if these are what he was referring to? (If there are more Warner titles coming.)

Warner Archives has been talking up the Lusty Men, no way it goes to Criterion, they want it on a fucking DVD-R too badly

It would be a terrible shame if they postponed the Oliver Stone film just to reissue the War Trilogy.zedz wrote:Though if the Bergman set is a massive hit, they might move Heaven and Earth to make it happen.

They can release it the month after It's a Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah World, twelve months after I'm dead and buried.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The new Criterion video about Bergman's Dreams has clips from, and mentions Hour if The Wolf, Passion of Anna, and Shame. The only credit for the clips is to Svensk Filmindustri. Is it possible these will follow the Persona release?

It was supposed to be only Persona for which MGM had let the rights lapse.

Maybe MGM decided Serpent's Egg was the only one worth keeping....?
