Wow those are two gorgeous looking BD's-- I never would have believed THE HITCH HIKER would have ever looked so good on home video. Love seeing this level of care on this pedigree of public domain releases. And THE STRANGER--though far from my favorite Welles--is a nice looking package too. Would be interesting to hear Wood do another commentary . . . he's a touch dry, but he's a real fanatic. He proves that via his great title choices for the label, and specifically via his way over-above-the-call-of-duty commentary and presentation for the Esper films. That was one great disc in its day (and still is).

Absolutely! Wood is the resident champion of exploitation and schlock at Kino and the Dwain Esper and Daughter of Horror discs usually get a spin around this time of year. A purgitive, if you will, to the Universal 30's and 50's Halloween standards!

Yeah that always bothered me too since my hearing is not all that it could be.

Indeed indeed! That Dementia disc with all that research that Wood did on JJ Parker and the trajectory of that unsung avant garde masterpiece was positively sublime--I truly think the original, words-free cut of the film a masterwork of independent experimental cinema. Some folks that I turn on to Dementia just don't gel with it at all, and look at me cockeyed when we meet again after they watch it. I'm so far into left field that I simply can't understand how a response like that in a dedicated cineaste with similar tastes is even possible. I see the film as a miracle. The world that this film conjures up--1950's pimps and whores, street hawkers, cruddy rooming houses, back alley drunks, low jazz dives, corrupt police . . . all transposed against the inner nightmare of personal historical maladjustment, emotional turnmoil, all of this is a gloomy, dreamy masterpiece of urban nightmare and the flipside of the jumpin jive derelict streets of yesteryear.

And a cornerstone of the American Independent cinema. Thank heaven it survived intact in its original cut devoid of censor edits.

Has anyone seen/heard anything about the announced Kino release of The Trial, aside from this post?

Russian Ark officially announced. No word on what if any extras will be included, so those with the OOP DVD ought to hold on to their copies for now.

Finally. This is great news, hopefully Zerkalo is next. Is that really the cover for it tho?

Blu-ray.com will often use poster images while waiting for the actual cover art to become available.

Here's hoping Kino does another Kinoterion Kollection cover like they did for The Sacrifice.

Is there a reason to think that the transfer for Nostalghia will come from a new restoration?

I think there's pretty strong reason: Kino Lorber was just touring a newly restored print.

Which, if I'm not mistaken, will mark the first acceptable transfer of this film on DVD / Blu.

if they don't screw it up

I wonder if they'll include Tempo di Viaggio.

It looks like the U.S. video rights to Tempo di Viaggio are still with Facets. Though for my money the more interesting Nostalghia supplement is the making-of doc that's on the AE disc.

Does Facets actually have the rights to anything they release?

The bigger question is given their history does Facets have the right to release anything ever ever again?

That's of course the question. Their transfer for The Sacrifice was pretty good, but it definitely had some DNR issues. I'm still happy to own a copy, but it's far from perfect.

During the early to mid 2000's, it was surprisingly difficult to get a good transfer of Tark's work. Perhaps unsurprising, since RusCiCo was never the best source of telecine in the business (not even mentioning the remix of Stalker).

Lately however, Kino seems to be getting their BD transfers nicely done. The Hitch Hiker looked phenomenal.

Sad when you get a better transfer of a PD noir that always languished in the Roan Group no-mans' land, than a top of the line Ophuls on CC.
