Re: Awards Season 2013
So "American Hustle" gets no bling. Oh well, it was just an honor to be nominated, right? :p
And even though there were better movies than "12 Years A Slave" nominated and/or not I'm fine with it winning the big prize.

Y'all are crazy for not seeing the greatness in that film but luckily some curmudgeons on this board are hardly the majority

Get over the idea that it has anything to do with willfully wanting to dislike it. Really, enough.

What's the most Oscars a film has won without winning Best Picture? Because Gravity's seven seems up there.

Show of hands, who REALLY believes 12 Years was the worst of the best picture nominees? I am happy it won over its main two competitors, even though I didn't think it was the year's best... but all snark aside, the worst?

Ridley thanked "Mr. Pitt," but did not mention McQueen, and McQueen didn't mention him.lacritfan wrote:John Ridley doesn't shake hands/hug Steve McQueen or Brad Pitt on the way down the aisle, what's that about?

Re: Awards Season 2013
I wonder how the original script differed from what was shot? Perhaps a falling out we won't hear about until years from now.

I'm pretending Ridley won fifteen years after the fact for the bonkers U Turn instead

Re: Awards Season 2013
The screenplay was definitely the weakest aspect of the film, but Ridley has some fascinating and delightful career in his rear view, and it'll be exciting to see what passion project ultimately gets made because of this win.

Re: Awards Season 2013
Just to be clear that was comedic exaggeration on my part though it is certainly the nominee I have the least interest in revisiting or thinking about (unless Captain Phillips and the Scorsese turn out something bad). On the surface I wouldn't call it a bad film, but I don't think it develops its narrative nor characters well enough to overcome that it seems to have no real interest in the institutions it is talking about. It may be McQueen's best film, but it is still a mostly mediocre take on material that could be a lot better.DarkImbecile wrote:Show of hands, who REALLY believes 12 Years was the worst of the best picture nominees? The Academy was making up for his Undercover Brother snub.domino harvey wrote:I'm pretending Ridley won fifteen years after the fact for the bonkers U Turn instead
Correct answer: The Wolf of Wall Street > Her > 12 Years a Slave > Captain Phillips > Nebraska > Gravity > American Hustle > Philomena > Dallas Buyers Clubdomino harvey wrote:Least of the six I've seen so far, will know soon enough overall
None were awful this year.

Gravity not only takes the most Oscars for the night, but it won the most Oscars of any individual film since Slumdog Millionaire five years ago

But he did shake hands with David O. Russell which surprises me as I thought there must be some bad blood still from the "Three Kings" screenplay dispute.lacritfan wrote:John Ridley doesn't shake hands/hug Steve McQueen or Brad Pitt on the way down the aisle, what's that about?

Re: Awards Season 2013
'Cepting DBC I don't see any of those risking the right mixture of mediocrity and squandered opportunity to knock 12 Years up. That said at its worst it's a film like Broken Arrow where you can sympathize with what it's doing historically even if the film itself doesn't match up.

Re: Awards Season 2013
...and because I was killing time before the show started by reading one of those Oscar books I picked up, I can now confirm, per our earlier debate, that according to the numerous citations within Inside Oscar 2 Braveheart was not only not pegged to win in 1995, it was actually running fourth for most predictors. Much confusion from pundits and celebs alike greeted its win. Apparently golden child Meryl Streep even mouthed something along the lines of "What the fuck" when it won, which is awesome. Anyways, back to the present....

Re: Awards Season 2013
12 Years is a solid winner, coupled with Gravity's seven, DBC's three, Spike Jonze. American Hustle was shut out but it had ten noms so you really can't complain. No surprises so a snoozer show but not a bad year for winners.
