Factoring in the depth of their respective classic catalogues (and putting aside PQ issues), Fox has a markedly better record than WB. Sony, in contrast, handed off Sleepless in Seattle and The Way We Were to a small boutique label.

Is it not better that a studio licenses out their catalogue to boutiques than sits on them? Sony deserves credit for letting Criterion, Mill Creek and TT release their films that maybe they wouldn't release themselves. Besides everything they license out has been at least a quality transfer and at most a spectacular one.

But simple math dictates that Warner without licensing > Sony with licensing. First-time on BD released/announced for release Jan-Jun '14: Warner 22 (+ 10 more for Paramount), Sony 10.

Yeah, you're implying that with licensing, Sony is getting out the same number of films that Warner releases themselves, but it's not even close. All the studios except Warner have licensed a significant number of films to Criterion, so no credit there. Mill Creek Blus generally have a terrible rep, so none there either. And the Twilight Time titles have the prohibitive price tag.

I think it's even safer to say that if The way we were or Sleepless in Seattle were Warner titles they would have already been released ages ago.

Warner has already put out most of its "really big" titles by now and they're still releasing more than most other studios. The problem is that their catalogue is so huge (and so good) that we can't help but want them to release even more.

In case anyone wasn't following the Warner Archive thread, the Blu-ray for The Americanization of Emily (1964) was released today.

Performance has been announced as well. As much as I'd love to blind-buy, I'll be waiting to hear if the audio's been fixed.

Of course, if I'd done a little more digging before posting, I'd have seen that the Internet has already answered this question, and the fix is in.

Well that's made my day, it's probably my favourite film of all time. Part of me was hoping it might somehow end up as a Criterion or MoC but I'll gladly take what I can get.

Amazon.com is listing Performance with a 3/25 date now, so it should be available to order from warnerarchive.com Tuesday.

I'm holding out for a Blu of What About Bob? which, according to the new Film Comment is, in fact, one of the last 10 films that Tilda Swinton has seen.

Sadly there's not a single Blockbuster left in Iowa, let alone Des Moines
