Re: Technical Issues and Questions
Haven't heard about the Sherwood player in a long time. I thought they disappeared after all the players broke down, but some must be remaining.
Anyway, I asked the same question a while back in the Charlie Chaplin Collection thread

I threw my Sherwood into the fire and a spirit flew out of the flames

Kill it with fire. It disturbs me to think that people in the US are using that POS with its forced edge enhancement to look at all the Region B exclusive goodies.

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I would happily buy a decent (but inexpensive) Region B BR player -- but it seems there is no way to do this other than flying to the UK (or Europe) and carrying one back with me on the plane.David M. wrote:Kill it with fire. Not a "modified" player? Looks good. How much better is it than my creaky S****d? ;~)domino harvey wrote:Untrue
(Last time I looked at that site -- a while ago admittedly -- I saw only no name stuff and over-priced older modded models).

Go to your local Sears and check for this one. I got one new for $50 and it's an incredible all region Blu player. The All Region thread has so much great info and was indispensable for me making the jump to multi-region viewing.

I thought people liked the Sherwoods? In any case mine looked vastly better than the awful LG I replaced it with. Although the modified Sony I bought from 220 a few months ago is better than either.

I don't think it was ever checked out from an accuracy standpoint. I saw one during a calibration job and it's garbage. There's no way to turn off edge enhancement. I wouldn't be surprised if the same was true of the other cheap players.

I have one of the Seikis and I love it- it very weirdly defaults to showing you everything in 480p, but once you fix that, everything else is pretty nice. It has an edge enhancement feature, but it's easy enough to turn off, and as I recall it wasn't on by default.

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I can also recommend Bombay Electronics for region-free modded units. Good selection, good prices, and good support. I screwed up a firmware upgrade, and their tech support was excellent.

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I have the one linked above. If you check our Region Free Player thread, you'll see several of us have ordered from this site with no problems, so it comes with personal vouchsafing. They are permanently modified to be region free and they have other name brands if you want to browse for a different modelMichael Kerpan wrote:Not a "modified" player? Looks good. Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I had a problem (of sorts) with them long ago (I think it was them) -- but that was with a pre-LCD era multiregion TV that got caught in the 9-11 madness. (Was not the right model, but Customs destroyed the shipping container, so there was no way to ship it back).

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
As far as I know, they take domestic players, modify them, and then box them back up and sell them to the consumers, all from in-country. They got mine out to me via priority shipping even though I chose the cheapest shipping option too. I really have nothing but great things to say about them

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I concur about Bombay Electronics. I actually had a problem with the first unit they sent me, the latest Oppo. When I unboxed it I could hear pieces rattling around inside, like the guts of it had been broken in transit, so I didn't even bother plugging it in. A return and replacement (that works perfectly a year later) was no hassle at all. They seem to ship from the Chicago area.

So that's at least two different retail options for a wide variety of region free players available without buying plane tix!

Just chiming in to say I'm another satisfied Bombay Electronics customer. The box even came with a sheet explaining how to set the player to specific regions.

Good to hear it has an "Off" switch - that's usually a good sign. Is "Off" definitely OFF though?matrixschmatrix wrote:I have one of the Seikis and I love it- it very weirdly defaults to showing you everything in 480p, but once you fix that, everything else is pretty nice. Re: Technical Issues and Questions
Hey, so i want to set-up a network in my house, but I'm not too tech savy. I would love if my oppo 93, wife's Apple desktop, and my HP laptop could all share media that was plugged in to the OPPO via an external HD, and possibly even share media the other direction, from what is on the local machines back to the oppo. It seems like this is more complicated than adding things to the shared folder. Can anyone link me to some advice about how to go about this? Thanks!

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I use Plex to stream media from my laptop/external HD to my Roku/Blu/iPad. It works pretty well (though using the iOS app doesn't seem to update resume feature to the last spot watched).

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
Did a search, but couldn't find anything. I'm in the process of consolidating tv shows & cartoons from many dvd's onto a hard drive. Is there a lossless file type for ripping video from dvd's (to be played from either Apple TV, Oppo or Sony player) & what are people finding to be the best app (on a Mac) these days for ripping discs?

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
I'm on a Mac and I use Ripit, which is idiot-proof and simple as can be (and that's why I like it)-- insert disc, click the icon, and it copies it exactly

Re: Technical Issues and Questions
...and what file format/compression setting do people use to put a bunch of shows on a hard drive for easy playing on multiple devices (usb port on dvd player or through AppleTV) while retaining as much of the original image/sound quality as possible?
