I think a lot of the connoisseurs, the people who appreciate special features, place a lot of extra value in a lengthy booklet and special features.

I like to think I'm not only buying the movie, but a whole release full with the loving work of people dedicated to providing the most interesting stuff and care they care. That's why even if Criterion releases cost me 20% than my usual BD, they end up being the biggest chunk of my collection.

How can labels compete against non-invested parties making the content available for free? If they lower their prices a bit, that still doesn't make them competitive against free availability. And if TT adds more special features, those could be pirated just like the main feature, no?

Labels compete against it all the time and succeed, and have done for years. People like owning a physical copy of the media they own and like to support the companies who restore and show love to the medium that they have an interest in. People love to rip open the shrinkwrap, flick through the accompanying booklet and display their releases with gorgeous cover art. Labels compete against licensed streaming sites too, where they are essentially up against the same beast - a relatively very cheap, no thrills, barebones experience.

Special features can be pirated too, but the majority of stuff taken off the net is just a ripped film. I think a lot of the connoisseurs, the people who appreciate special features, place a lot of extra value in a lengthy booklet and special features.

I would say the one area where TT scores points with me compared to some other labels is their deal with Sony, which lets them put out 4k sourced restored transfers of some very fine films. It's a lot better, for me at least, to have that than an extras laden edition but with only an average to above average transfer from universal or mgm (recognising obviously that TT is also similar releasing MGM titles).

Also your argument is somewhat moot when you praise Arrow's work but then say even for those labor of love extra laden editions, you will only pay 8 GBP for them. In a way that suggests you dont really care about gow.much content there is, just the price point.

No, that's not true. I meant that because Arrow, or the sites selling their releases, slash their prices so quickly and consistently, it never makes sense to buy them at "full price", as they are always heavily reduced only a few months in or part of a 3 for £20 offer. It doesn't seem to happen with the same regularity and certainty for ones from MoC or the BFI or foreign labels.

Not sure if these have been mentioned here before, but TT has also confirmed some more upcoming title - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), Exodus (1960), Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Cutter's Way (1981), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), The Young Lions (1958) and "Certainly more Ken Loach in 2015."

Hadn't heard about the Barefoot Contessa, excellent news! Exodus is already out on Blu-ray in several countries and can be imported for under $20. I was holding out to see if it was part of Kino's releasing, but now there's no sense in waiting

Criterion missed a big opportunity with Cutter's Way, absolutely one of the best American films of the 80s. I hope the TT disc looks spectacular.

I don't relish giving money to Twilight Time, but I'm afraid A Man For All Seasons is enough to break me. It's an outstanding picture, and I've been holding out for a Blu for a long, long time. (OK, more like 4 years, but for a movie with so many awards it's taken far too long to reach hi def.)

I was double-checking the DVD specs on Amazon to see if there were any supplements that might be ported (there aren't any to speak of) and for kicks I checked the one-star reviews. I take satisfaction in the fact that three of the four aren't reviews at all, and even the fourth praises its merits as a film while ranting on about the history.

I don't think that I will be interested in their promotional offers anymore now on. First, they resurface an OOP title and then hike the qualifying price tag from $100 to $150. I give up, and this is coming from a person, who owns 65 TT titles.

Just like the $100 requirement was really a $120 requirement, 5 titles will put you a quarter short of $150, so it's effectively a 6 title or $180 requirement.

I stopped bothering when they stopped timing the promotions with new pre-orders. For the record, TT's Facebook post regarding this did say that the $150 was a new rate, but has since been amended to remove that implication. The SAE website does still give that impression however.

In comparison, I paid $150 for a copy of Shout's Herzog collection, which has 16 films and is signed by Werner fucking Herzog. Not only can I not believe Twilight Time keeps raising the level of their absurdity, but that these promotions will continue to sell out in an instant. Scary.
