I'll admit that I didn't get the politics of the film -- at least I don't think I did. But I love the film and consider it one of my all time favorites simply by how Bunuel attacks the blind teachings of the church. The good-hearted, naive nun doesn't understand the world she tries to save, and to me this is aggressive, funny, and tragic at the same time.
I guess I can understand why some people don't like it. But then I think we would disagree as to what makes Bunuel the great filmmaker that he is.
According to a Criterion press release, this has been postponed indefinitely: The Children Are Watching Us moves from January to March, and Viridiana moves from February to a date to be decided.
Viridiana is entirely missing on the Criterion website. No new date, and no further news. I had a premonition that the most desirable announcement of 2006 would somehow not happen as originally promised.
I'm noticing that Viridiana is no longer listed on the "coming soon" page on criterion.com
Thanks a lot guys, you killed it. I'll bet it was pushed back to May so they could start their entire marketing process over again. I hope you're happy.
I jest.
maybe if everyone would clamor just as hard for a box set...
I only looked in the "coming soon" section, which lists future releases. "Viridiana" has been taken out of that section. They obviously have not removed all links related to the item. If "Viridiana" is to be combined with one or more additional Bunuels (an optimistic assumption), the linked information will eventually change. If only the cover art changes, the linked information will eventually change to show the new cover. If nothing changes except the date, that would explain why all the links have been kept intact. A two month delay with no compensation..... that would be disappointing.
The Lower Depths was delayed almost a year after it's announcment, and was later released with The Renoir film. Yet, Criterion used to delay titles a month or two all the time when they were making announcments only three months in advance. Now with the additional month, I think we will be seeing this more often. For example two of the four January titles have been delayed by a month or two already!
Hopefully, it isn't just a cover redesign and we get more extras for this landmark masterpiece.
Something else to consider: If Criterion bows to perennial grumblers such as I, then it puts them
in a fragile position for future grumblings, of which - I predict - there will be many. 8-[

Somehow I don't think the good people at CC lose to much sleep over what they read on this forum. They probably flipped some scenes ala Jules and Jim or something and are fixing it.

Nice one Krakpot.
Who the hell is Krakpot? Or is that some kind of forum in-joke?
There it is: Silvia Pinal to Appear on Upcoming Viridiana Release
We are pleased to announce that we have secured a video interview with Silvia Pinal, the luminous star of Luis Buñuel's Viridiana, for inclusion on our upcoming release of the film. This eleventh-hour addition will require us to postpone the street date, but given Pinal's contributions to this and other of Bunuel's Mexican/Spanish films, we feel it's well worth the wait. Look for Viridiana in May of 2006!

Krakpot, in light of the news posted by pauling, I hope you're no longer pissed off at us. [-o<
