As large as it is, the IMDB list only scratches the surface:
Panahi: White Balloon, Offside, The Circle
Kiarostami: Taste of Cherry, Life and Nothing More, Shirin, Ten, Certified Copy, Like Someone in Love
Engels: The Little Fugitive, Weddings and Babies
Mikhailkov: An Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano, Without Witness

The Aviator's Wife (Rohmer), Those Blue Remembered Hills (Gibson), The Tempest (Jarman, Taymor, etc...), Do the Right Thing (Lee), Clockwise (Morahan), Groundhog Day (Ramis), The Breakfast Club (Hughes), Tickets (Olmi/Kiarostami/Loach)...

That was the one I had in mind, but it gets into some odd flashbacks within flashbacks where it's questionable where the sort of referent action is
Hateful Eight has flashbacks but they're all narrated within the 24-hour timeframe of the film. If the flashbacks are too much more removed than that, they're probably pushing it.

For those interested: Criticker isn't too community-friendly (500 character limit on reviews, no comment system, and you aren't even permitted to see who follows you), but for data and tracking they're unbeatable, and their collection feature is extremely useful: filterable by year, genre, country, director, etc. There is one for just about every mini-genre suggested:

24 hours (or less) timeframe
Road trip
Female directors
Coming-of-age / High school / Children in lead role
Pre-Code Hollywood
Film noir / Neo-noir / TSPDT 250 Quintessential Noir Films

...and so on. There's no official moderation, but still way more comprehensive and useful than IMDb's various systems

A couple of other obvious titles left off that IMDb list (just off the top of my head) are Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Night of the Living Dead. Also, note that not everything on that list would fit the criteria for this project. Dead Calm, for instance, does mostly take place over one day, but the first few scenes of the movie definitely take place much earlier than the later action on the boat.

Didn't that film begin on the day before the outing (the book event?) and end around dusk?

Lots of great films qualify, but I think it's going to be one of those lists where I don't have the energy to go through all my favourites to figure out which ones do and don't qualify, since it's not a 'natural' category for me. But I'm really looking forward to the discussion!

I was misremembering their outing as taking place immediately after the book reading. There are other ones where I can't remember for sure if everything occurs in one day, and synopses don't always specify. Hey I just remembered two more though: Duck Season & Lake Tahoe.

If you're thinking of voting for a movie where there's a little five minute coda on either side of the otherwise time compressed narrative, I think it's fine, unless you just get dumb about it. Also, just realized that of course the brilliant Triangle is perversely the most eligible film for this list!

I don't want to beat an over-familiar drum, but does anybody else find it weird that Women Directors should be a mini-list and not a full-blown Genre (or whatever) list? It seems to me there's way more eligible / likely / interesting films in that category than in most of those others under consideration, and limiting it to 15 films would be crazily impossible (I mean, there are ten Claire Denis features that deserve a place on any 'best of' list). I also think that project could make for some of the most interesting discussions we've had in the lists project, since almost all of the usual suspects would be excluded.

It's not actually under consideration on the official list of possibilities (for either), so yes and no

Ah, I misunderstood the post then. And I guess I just suggested it as a future possibility.

Oh, I definitely don't think it should be a mini-list either (mini should have been in parentheses). I would fully support it as a full list.

edit: bad aside, I sighed

That would be lovely. I was also thinking, reworking an earlier suggestion I had, a(n American) black films list. At times it really feels like Spike Lee is the only black filmmaker anyone talks about (though I would think films by non-black directors like Black Caesar should be eligible)

I was looking through the FAQ and the beginning of this thread, and I couldn't find anything about list format. Are they to be submitted in the same format as the final compiled lists are presented, i.e.:
01 Out of the Past (Jacques Tourneur 1947)
02 Etc.
and listed directly in the body of the PM, not an attachment? And default to IMDb titles for foreign films?

The more information you provide to the list tabulator the easier their job will be, but there is no required format. At the very least, you should provide enough information for the film to be easily identified. (For example, if you simply vote for Leviathan in the 2010-2014 list, I will have to follow up with you to ask which film you mean.)

Yes, the golden rule is: be nice to your list tabulator. Provide them with enough info to identify your film ( which they may have never heard of). I loved it when participants included director, year or country info, because it meant I didn't have to look it up. The other big plus is avoiding obscure aliases, as it's an easy way to inadvertently orphan your film. Sawdust and Tinsel has had a confusing enough titling history without inventing new, silly names for it at this late stage.

Carney's Twilight. Somebody voted for that in the 50s list and I didn't realize they were referring to the original cut of Shadows.

swo17, thank you for raising and pursuing this great idea for the new all-time list project, and thank you to everyone who contributed ideas or backed ideas you thought were good. This is very exciting. To me, this new all-time list could result in many, many people being led to many great films.

What is the timeline for the decades lists? Specifically, when it loops back around, are we going to do the full silent era or end at 1920 (or whenever)?

I liked having them split out (otherwise the '20s get all the attention) although maybe the pre-1920s should only be a half list.
