Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
You beat me to my edit. Should we expect a solo release for such a short film when Le Petit Soldat is still in need of a release?

If this would be the case it would be great if paired or accompanied by Tavernier's Laissez passer which deals with the making of this filmBlutarsky wrote: Tue Mar 19, 2019 1:18 am I was scrolling through the France filter for DVD and Blu-Rays and came across Tourneur's La main du diable on the list.

Polyester looks confirmed for 2019, according to a post on the official Divine FB page.

To all of you more experienced in Criterion tea leaf reading than I am, does a Janus tweet like this one about The Cranes Are Flying mean anything reliable with regards to a theatrical tour and/or Criterion blu ray upgrade? I’ve been hoping for some news on that front since a new 2k restoration premiered at Berlinale 2018. Is there some more formal announcement I should be on the lookout for? Too early/vague to get excited?

It has a page on the Janus website, so a tour could be coming soon.bad future wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 10:02 pm To all of you more experienced in Criterion tea leaf reading than I am, does a Janus tweet like this one about The Cranes Are Flying mean anything reliable with regards to a theatrical tour and/or Criterion blu ray upgrade? I saw the page on the Janus site but wasn’t sure if that was new, or if maybe they’ve had it available for exhibition on blu ray and DCP since before the new restoration. Still, I’ll take “not unpromising”!

Isn't it streaming on the Criterion Channel this month? (In a few days, anyway.) Depending on what it looks like, I'd take that as a good sign.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but Last Hurrah for Chivalry opens with a Janus logo. Indicates possible future disc release?

Really cool that after the Police Story set and now this they seem to have a good amount of titles from Fortune Star!

Same! I'm really excited to see John Woo enter the collection once again and hope that Criterion ended up getting the rights to A Better Tomorrow as well. Hopefully they don't decide to release one Fortune Star title a year.DRW.mov wrote: Thu Apr 04, 2019 1:48 am Really cool that after the Police Story set and now this they seem to have a good amount of titles from Fortune Star!

Re: Forthcoming: Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
GOSTA BERLING'S SAGA Saga ran on TCM the other day with a Janus logo. I'm hoping for a Criterion release -- a new restoration played in San Francisco last year.jwd5275 wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2017 3:09 amLindberg's June Night and Stiller's Gosta Berling Saga and Sir Arne's Treasure all immediately jump to mind.Minkin wrote:Did Kino have anything else licensed from Svensk Films?

Here's hoping they get the color timing right.

Like keeping the warm filter or removing it?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Something much closer to the Turbine Blu-ray or the original DVD from Criterion. The Universal Blu-ray imo completely messed things up. After seeing the movie in 35mm with the original colors, watching that made it look dull. The extreme stylization of colors fit the heat and the tone, and I kept the original Criterion release for that reason.

Correct color timing would probably be the only reason to buy it over current blu-ray.

So re: "why was Sofia Coppola recently in the Criterion studio?"
The transfer of Bugsy Malone on the channel is terrific (Haven't seen the ITV blu-ray for comparison), and it's one of Coppola's favorite movies. Just throwing that out there for a possible future disc supplement.

It could be a disc supplement, but her interview on the film is already on the Criterion Channel as well so it could've just been for the site.motefuzz wrote: Tue Apr 09, 2019 6:35 pm So re: "why was Sofia Coppola recently in the Criterion studio?"

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
How the heck did I miss that? Quality post alert.
edit: Just searched for and watched the video. The app didn't suggest it for me after I watched the movie, which you would think would make me the target demographic for this clip. Her comments are pretty unsubstantial and off the cuff, and it's noted in the video that Criterion was going to program the movie anyway before she came in. So yeah, I was way off.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Not sure where to post this or if it has been posted elsewhere, but a reverse-spine columned search reveals a wealth of new titles, including Uncle Boonmee and Cemetery of Splendor, tons of Fassbinder, Berlanga, Safdie, and Kaurismaki, two Vardas and a Chytilova, Dersu Uzala, Spirits of the Dead, Miracle in Milan, Room at the Top, etc. Do we know anything about this? More phantom pages?

We already knew about the Wellspring titles, but is this the first true confirmation of Lili Marleen?
