Almost as strange is that this isn’t McCarthy’s long-awaited follow up to Spotlight... a straight to Disney+ kids movie called Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made is

I rewatched this movie, I thought it was fine with a great lead performance and cool direction the first time. But this movie (upon rewatch) was seriously good. It's longer than I remember, over 2 hours, and I found it gripping. I recall around 50 mins into the film I felt I was seeing a sort of third act turn and was wondering how far we were into it, only to remember upon pausing that the structure of the film is a bit more fun than conventional narrative. By the time we find out that his daughter is probably responsible (if not responsible for other things) it had turned into a full on character drama. If there were any people considering watching this movie that missed it the first time- I recommend it.
Having said all of this, didn't really love Abigail Breslin in it. But this time I started getting a vague take away that the dude has basically turned from an All-American to a sort of radical in favor of acceptance that is reminiscent of muslims. They have a moment in the film about this, but only in the rewatch was I so struck by how it parallels the ending moments before credits. As I said- I understand many may not like it for a plethora of reasons on the surface. But I was very fucking surprised by the serious quality of this one!
