Re: Awards Season 2019
DGA, PGA and WGA mean that Jojo Rabbit not getting a BP nomination would be insanely shocking.
Too bad that Gerwig didn't get a nomination for Little Women at the DGA.
I'm continued to be impressed that the four hour Irishman is racking up so many nominations, I still haven't met anyone in person in Los Angeles in the industry that has watched the Irishman. (almost no one has even heard of the new 3 hour Malick movie whose name I can't remember).

Re: Awards Season 2019
With today being the last day for submission of Oscar nomination ballots and all the major guilds having put forth their nominations, I'll venture some predictions ahead of next week's announcement, which is likely to feature some oddball surprises given the shortened voting window (a couple of entertainment reporters have noted that many voters they spoke to over the weekend had no idea when the nominating deadline was):

The Irishman was more "photoreal" than Alita but okay

I just thought you figured The Irishman was snubbed in the photoreal category but I guess I did read it wrong.

Re: Awards Season 2019
Also I'm currently predicting Alita to be nominated at the Oscars based on the strengths of other precursors so there's that.

I'm surprised you're not going with Taylor Russell here - sadly, I think it'll be perhaps the only nom Waves will get, but I don't see this perf getting a snub.DarkImbecile wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2020 6:33 pm

If it were based on my preferences, I would, but Waves got shockingly little traction and I'd be surprised if it gets a single nomination, unfortunately.

She seemed to be in pretty much every awards list up until recently. I thought she would ride the wave all the way to the big one.DarkImbecile wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2020 6:48 pm If it were based on my preferences, I would, but Waves got shockingly little traction and I'd be surprised if it gets a single nomination, unfortunately.

I’d say it’s in the top four contenders, along with 1917, Irishman, and Hollywood, but I have to think the foreign language hurdle is still a real obstacle

Re: Awards Season 2019
I think so too, but I don't recall (or know of) any foreign-language nominee that came off this strong as a Best Picture contender. It wouldn't surprise me if it broke the barrier and became the first foreign-language film to win the top prize.DarkImbecile wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2020 7:25 pm I’d say it’s in the top four contenders, along with 1917, Irishman, and Hollywood, but I have to think the foreign language hurdle is still a real obstacle

Re: Awards Season 2019
The thing with Marriage Story is that it's missed the top category everywhere with only 5 nominations for the top prize (BAFTA, SAG, DGA) which tells me it doesn't have broad support.
