Just for fun I'll make a (bold?) prediction who's going to be the top director.
Spoiler
My guess is Denis Villeneuve. He's got six films in this decade, all of them will receive votes and I think he'll make the top 100 with at least three of them.

I'd say three of Wes Anderson's films, and then PTA's, have a greater chance of placing on the final list.

-Three films that take place entirely during eras from the last millennium (and each is predominantly contained within separate, but adjacent, decades), helmed by three distinct filmmakers who all have anticipated films ostensibly coming out this year
-Only two entirely non-English language films from neighboring countries and in the same language, and one foreign production primarily in the English language but taking place primarily outside the U.S. in a city-state
-Two films taking place in MA, involving kids coping with respective crises; one is more obviously MA-based and the kid is not the central focus, one is less obviously MA-based and the kids are the central focus; both are contemporary but only the latter is heavily emblematic of Gen Z culture
-Two films about characters who are musicians starting in their youth; one a comic-inspired comedy, the other a bifurcated tragedy

If going by IMDb release dates, only six decades are represented; if going by my top ten lists, seven are. Also I have no BP winners on my list of 50.
My guesses:
Spoiler
1. La Flor, Phantom Thread, Moonrise Kingdom
2. Not sure what the neighboring countries are, though I'm guessing the language is French? And The Young Pope
3. The easiest category by far. Manchester by the Sea, Assassination Nation
4. Scott Pilgrim, Vox Lux (though that description is identical to Waves, which threw me)

Great! You guys have just reminded me that I had forgotten to put Ceyda Torun's wonderful Istanbul cat movie Kedi (2016) on my list. A truly beautiful portrait of that city seen through the eyes of some cats which are perfect stand-ins for the eyes of us humans.

You're close!
Spoiler
La Flor isn't a period film, but since it is a foreign language film, that should influence your guess for part one of the second clue (you were of course right on part two). No French films in my top ten is definitely as surprising to me as it is to you. The rest is spot-on.

Also, this is me after racing to IMDb and discovering that Mariano Llinás is not coming out with a new twisty narrative film this year: Image

zedz wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 9:06 pm Fun(?) facts for my top ten:

The average length of the films in my top ten is 263 minutes. if that sounds ridiculous, the average length of the films in my bottom ten is 278 minutes, and that includes three shorts!

The titles in my top ten includes four animals and three place names. Two of the films sound much jollier than the actually are.
I'm just guessing without doing the math (partly because I can never remember what La flor's actual runtime is, which is listed as different across the internet)
Spoiler
Animals: An Elephant Sitting Still, The Turin Horse, Fish and Cat (I'm betting this counts as two animals)
Places: The Ancient Woods, Cemetery of Splendour, Mysteries of Lisbon
Two films that sound jolly but aren't: Happy Hour, My Joy

I'm also betting that La Flor is in there. And Faces Places (though not counting as a name of a place).
Almost completely correct, but I was meaning actual place names (real or imaginary).

Try and decode these, TWBB:

1. The director with the most films on my list is on there with three shorts.
2. My list has three 3D films, including one that's actually 6D.

One of your clues was for Moonrise Kingdom? I was thinking of the Young Pope, Caprice, and Magic in the Moonlight. Though Jackie, Amanda, and Maniac were all tough cuts.

I didn't realize it until I saw a Facebook post, but today is John Waters' birthday. I looked his imdb page up, and was reminded that he released Kiddie Flamingos a few years back. I would have loved to watch it for the project, but can't seem to find it anywhere online. Does anyone here know where to find it?

Yeah, I find what the first film has to say about spirituality's corporeal bargain to be more inspiring in its sensible irony than what the second has to say about psychology (unsurprisingly my two greatest interests) but they're both so great. I wound up making room for some weird stuff in the back ten for fun, but this was a tough list to narrow down. To add to the irrationality you detect, that's not even my highest ranking Woody Allen!

List submitted. Like my other lists its heavily weighed in favor of American films and men directors. I should focus on casting a wider net in the next project. Finding foreign films should be no problem, but I don't know of many women directors who worked in the 60s.

Here are some stats:

Films watched for the project: 284 (all but 18 in the last two months!)
Films watched for the project that made my final list: 25

2010: 3
2011: 5
2012: 6
2013: 3
2014: 3
2015: 6
2016: 8
2017: 4
2018: 6
2019: 6

Women directors: 7
Directors with multiple entries on the list: Three with two, one with three
Feature debuts: 6
Documentaries: 8
Animated films: 3
Softcore porn: 2
Best Picture Oscar winners: 1
Criterions: 3

USA: 26, Japan: 5, UK: 3, China: 2, France: 2, Hong Kong: 2, Argentina: 1, Australia: 1, Brazil: 1, Cambodia: 1, Canada: 1, India: 1, Israel: 1, Jamaica: 1, Romania: 1, South Korea: 1

Next 10:

51. Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman, 2015)
52. Lean on Pete (Andrew Haigh, 2017)
53. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2011)
54. Her (Spike Jonze, 2013)
55. The Assistant (Kitty Green, 2019)
56. The Interrupters (Steve James, 2011)
57. A Bread Factory, Part One and A Bread Factory, Part Two (Patrick Wang, 2018)
58. Museum Hours (Jem Cohen, 2012)
59. Boyhood (Richard Linklater, 2014)
60. Shoah: Four Sisters (Claude Lanzmann, 2018)

But the top director is the one with the most points, right?

I can imagine Villeneuve making the list even with four films. And even if not, the two Andersons have only made three features each, while Villeneuve could gather extra points with six different films which - I stand by that prediction - will all at least be also-rans.
