Silent Sherlock Holmes series of the 1920s gets major restoration project
The on-screen Sherlock Holmes who had the approval of Arthur Conan Doyle himself, Eille Norwood starred in a series of 1920s silent films. Now they’re being fully restored as part of a major BFI project made possible by Iron Mountain Entertainment Services.

Here is a first-look at the 4K restoration of 'Assault on Precinct 13' from Deaf Crocodile. Note that the color grading is not final.

Valerio Zurlini with Claudia Cardinale and François Perrin is back in French theatres.
According to the web site, there has been a X4 restoration.
No blu-ray is announced in France.

This is my favorite Zurlini movie and Claudia Cardinale is    It had a theatrical releases some years ago in France, then was released via mk2 (I think it was mk2) on DVD.
So far, no official blu-ray came out.
That said, I've "found" at amazon.it and bought blu-ray of this movie several years ago; this is not DVD-to HD upscaling but has really some HD details; it looks like a honest "true" HTDV transfer (as if they had access to a HD master of the old mk2 DVD and made a blu-ray with this old source).

Is there any sign of an official blu-ray release of La ragazza con la valigia ? Of course a Criterion release would be brilliant.
They release in Italy a blu-ray of "Seduced and Abandoned" for instance, but the restoration was ruined by some video filtering.

Claudia Cardinale was here a couple of years back to present her new film & participate in a Public Interview... She said that LA RAGAZZA CON LA VALIGIA was her favourite of all her films... Should the CC consider a Blu Ray release of this new 4K restoration, I'm sure Cardinale could contribute something to the package, an interview or suchlike...

Talking of recent restorations, a new (2019) 4K restoration by L'Immagine Ritrovata @ Cineteca di Bologna & The Film Foundation of Francesco Rosi's CADAVERI ECCELLENTI has just been released on DVD in Italy... It looks good & would well deserve a Blu Ray release... Interestingly the 4K restoration of CADAVERI ECCELLENTI used two first generation reversal elements and the Italian magnetic sound mix, both provided by MGM. Two vintage 35mm prints, preserved by the BFI, were used for the colour grading...

Andrea Kalas of Paramount speaks about film restoration in this podcast:

Interesting comment from the thread:
"Much of the Paramount silent library is archived at LOC and locked up via an original donor restriction from the 1970s (or before)."

Just noticed this; Kino Lorber’s upcoming The Comedy of Terrors (1964) has a minor edit issue fixed. Had no idea about this before.

In the A Season of Classic Films series:
FREE SCREENING: Tko pjeva zlo ne misli (One Song a Day Takes a Mischief Away, 1970., 95'), with English subtitles

„One Song a Day Takes a Mischief Away“ directed by Krešo Golik and produced by „Croatia film“ in 1970. is a lively reconstruction of the Zagreb pre-war culture in 1935, and the plot, set in a specific ambience and time, encompasses the daily life of the Šafranek family.

A Season of Classic Films is an initiative of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) to raise awareness of the work of national and regional film archives, connecting the public with cinema history and the preservation of film heritage. Twenty-two European film institutions are taking part this year offering free access to films from their precious collections. This screening is organised by Hrvatski državni arhiv, Zagreb, with the support of Creative Europe.
”Film će biti dostupan na YouTube kanalu HDA-a od 18. do 25. lipnja 2021.: https://youtu.be/S6CM15BEKg8” so apparently available to watch from 18th till 25th of June.

Thanks, Rupert. Yes, looks like mk2 did release La ragazza con la valigia on a French DVD (as La Fille à la valise). The Euro-American company NoShame released it in the U.S. in 2006 as part of their Valerio Zurlini set, along with the director's Violent Summer, but it's been OOP for years. Would be nice if Criterion picked both of those up.

BTW, the website you linked to gives "Francis (François) Perrin" as Cardinale's co-star, but it's actually Jacques Perrin, the French actor who's worked with a lot of top people both in front of the camera and behind it, as an Oscar-winning producer. He even managed to break up the Godard-Karina marriage (if only temporarily) back in the day.

Further re: Zurlini -- La prima notta di quiete has been restored in 4K, original 127 minute version (some sources say 132 minutes), a Cannes Classics 2019 selection. Link to French distributor info:

Here is a recent review of La ragazza con la valigia in French:
https://www.dvdclassik.com/critique/la- ... se-zurlini
Footnotes say that Claudia Cardinale was dubbed by Adriana Asti, and Jacques Perrin by Massimo Turci. Also, Zurlini was up for directing The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, but after disagreeing with the producers, he let Vittorio de Sica take over.

Studio Canal 2021 trailer for upcoming restorations:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VpuP_QX3LU
Includes "Paris Frills" (=Falbalas?), The Graduate, The Elephant Man, The Ladykillers, Flash Gordon, Basic Instinct, The Great Flamarion (Mann) and more.

Details about the Basic Instinct resto:
"The first step was to scan the 35MM image negative of the film in 4K DPX LOG 16 bits on Scanity – but the restoration team at Hiventy Laboratory in Joinville-le-Pont noticed a problem with the negative. STUDIOCANAL project manager, Sophie Boyer, explains – “we quickly realized that the negatives corresponded to the short version of the film. In addition, some shots from the most erotic scenes were censored in the United States. We went looking for these cuts: their negatives had disappeared, but we found them in the internegative. Thanks to this, we were able to restore the full length version of the film, the only version that Paul Verhoeven wanted to have restored.”

All damages on the negatives were identified: stains, scratches, dusty shots and instabilities. DIAMANT film software was used to remove these defects. The laboratory undertook over 100 hours of manual removal of the dark stains. Light filtering was applied to remove the superficial defects, with particular care taken to retain the grain and the texture of the original image. The film was colour graded for theatrical, home entertainment and 4K HDR release using previous digital releases and 35MM prints as a reference. The colour-grading required a painstaking homogenization between the different versions (the director’s cut vs. censored versions). The sound was similarly restored – the dynamic of the mixes was improved and the sync checked throughout, with corrections made using Protools plug-ins for a 5.1 + 2.0 version, from sources 3324."

This trailer is a mixture of theatrical re-releases and new restorations, with a lack of clear visibility about what's what.

A promo for the 4K restoration of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm was popping up on TCM during their just concluded film festival programming. I've uploaded it, if you'd like to take a look.

It seems to be the same one recently shown at the annual Widescreen Weekend Festival in Bradford, UK -- an original MGM pre-release announcement trailer reconstructed from 6-perf Cinerama negatives, as well as a 7-channel magnetic soundtrack.

According to restorer Dave Strohmaier, the film is being remastered in both letterbox and SmileBox formats for eventual Blu-ray and DVD release from the Warner Archive Collection sometime later in 2021.

"Restoration and re-mastering “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" from 3-strip 35mm negatives"
The in70mm YouTube channel has uploaded a SmileBox trailer for the restored The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. Looks really nice. Smileboxed "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" trailer in Cinerama

Sylvain Chomet’s 2003 The Triplets of Belleville has just received a 4K remaster. Fingers crossed for a good Region A release.
The news was announced by Paris-based producer-distributor Prime Entertainment Group, which cited “growing demand for animated programs and specifically” this feature. Prime has struck distribution deals for the remaster with France, the U.K., Germany, Japan, and Taiwan, but not yet with North America.

If this is what was used on the new UHD, it does look like a massive upgrade. The old BD's did have visible problems, but by any standard the UHD seems to be a properly done transfer. Surprised that the OCN for the scenes censored in the U.S. could disappear when the uncensored cut was commercially issued, and not long after the fact.

The new restoration easily beats the older quite bad BD but the grading is bonkers and a non negligible chunk of the movie is heavily grain managed.

For my own edification, do any of the caps-a-cholic screencaps demonstrate bonkers grading or excessive grain management in notable ways?

The grading definitely leans yellow, but it's not Ritrovata piss—the sky is recognizably blue (on my uncalibrated laptop), and the old BD looks more than a little too blue in comparison, to my unprofessional eyes, such that the whites are often blown out and the yellow push at least looks less unnatural, however unnatural it may still be in some scenes.

It's not yellow'd but visibly tealed, especially during outside scenes but not only. The interior scenes on the other hand are often excessively dull and milky.
The caps in caps-a-holic are mostly NOT showing the grain management, but the related thread on blu-ray.com have multiple caps showing it. I also posted on Twitter caps for this and non-management caps showing how intense and visible the difference is : https://twitter.com/Testsbluraycom/stat ... 81248?s=19
