The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu (1929) | The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu (1930) – Double Feature
• Brand New 2K Masters
• NEW Audio Commentaries by Novelist and Critic Tim Lucas
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles

THE MYSTERIOUS DR. FU MANCHU (1929) B&W 82 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
The diabolical doctor makes his talkie film debut in The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, based on the first book in Sax Rohmer’s classic series. During the Boxer Rebellion, Dr. Fu Manchu, deviously played by Warner Oland (Charlie Chan in Paris), saves the life of little Lia Eltham; but soon after, his own wife and child are killed by the allied troops. He takes revenge by hypnotizing the now grown Lia, played by screen great Jean Arthur (A Foreign Affair), to do his evil bidding. The world’s most notorious supervillain is born in this Pre-Code chiller from director Rowland V. Lee (Tower of London). Co-starring Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon of TV’s Batman) as Dr. Jack Petrie and O.P. Heggie (The Bride of Frankenstein) as Inspector Nayland Smith.

THE RETURN OF DR. FU MANCHU (1930) B&W 73 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
The fiendish Dr. Fu is back with a vengeance in The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu, as the evil criminal genius continues his campaign of cruelty on the foggy moors of the English estate where Lia Eltham and Dr. Jack Petrie are set to marry. Director Rowland V. Lee (Son of Frankenstein) returns along with Warner Oland (Charlie Chan’s Secret), Jean Arthur (Easy Living), O.P. Heggie (The Count of Monte Cristo) and Neil Hamilton (Tarzan the Ape Man) for this sequel that’s more menacing, more exciting and more bloodcurdling than the first.

It’s funny to me that they’re doing an Anna May Wong collection and a Fu Manchu collection, but neither contains Daughter of the Dragon in which Wong plays the daughter of Fu Manchu. It’s actually quite decent and costars Sessue Hayakawa. It’s also the third and final feature appearance of Warner Oland as Fu Manchu, so it seems a particularly odd exclusion from that set.

Red tape. I wonder why so many early 30s Paramount films have rights issues preventing their release? That doesn't seem to be a problem with the Warners and MGM films of the same era.

The Horse Soldiers (1959)
• Brand New 4K Master
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Joseph McBride, the Author of Searching for John Ford
• Theatrical Trailer
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 120 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated
Screen legends John Wayne (Rio Bravo) and William Holden (The Wild Bunch) team up with eminent western director John Ford (The Searchers) for this Civil War adventure packed with laughter, romance and thrills. A faithful representation of one of the most daring cavalry exploits in history, The Horse Soldiers tells the rousing tale of a troop of Union soldiers who force their way deep into Southern territory to destroy a rebel stronghold at Newton Station. In command is hardbitten Colonel Marlowe (Wayne), a man who is strikingly contrasted by the company’s gentle surgeon (Holden) and the beautiful but crafty Southern belle (Constance Towers, The Naked Kiss) who’s forced to accompany the Union raiders on perhaps the most harrowing mission in the war. The stellar supporting cast includes sports pioneer Althea Gibson and many frontier favorites like Judson Pratt, Ken Curtis, Willis Bouchey, Bing Russell, O.Z. Whitehead, Hank Worden, Denver Pyle, Strother Martin and Hoot Gibson.

This nugget just came from the Insider. Which means this had to be reached with Amazon.
Anyway, I'm a bit surprised no one noticed the Mr. Wong and MGM connection over the weekend. The 5 films are part of a new MGM deals we signed last week.

Mostly intrigued at the prospect of a third 70s MGM title from their library for 4K - as I assuming Pelham 123 and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot have to be the first two they’d want. (They have an additional unannounced one from the previous deal) Maybe Fistful of Dynamite?

They have confirmed that both new titles were released by “other labels,” but that one was released by MGM before being released by the other label. So I think that seems likely to be Fargo? And by the same token we can start looking at 80s or 90s titles that boutique labels released that MGM didn’t do first for the other title.

There are a number of MGM titles that were released by MGM before being re-released by a boutique labels. So it could be (off the top of my head) Dances with Wolves or Platoon or Return of the Living Dead or Get Shorty or Manhunter ('though they've said this is with another label) or Child's Play or Ronin

I don't think it's been mentioned before (apologies if it has!) but Eternal Sunshine 4k has finally been dated for July 22 (same date as the Planet of the Vampires 2k BD and the Killing UHD).

"Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" wouldn't require a new deal as the Kino Lorber Insider has stated that they obtained UHD rights to films that they do 4K scans for ("Irma la Douce", "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", "The Thomas Crown Affair", and "The Long Riders" though they stated that the UHD rights for Crown were dropped and a recent comment implies Riders might of been). Also, I could of sworn that "unannounced one" was actually just a standard Blu release of "Tentacles" and not a 4K title. They've ruled out "A Fistful of Dynamite" due to the potential cost.

:(

The BD from a few years back was a disappointment and I was just lamenting the other day that we might never get a better one (there's a new US release of Extreme Prejudice coming out next month from Vestron, and I'm not sure they did a new scan).
