Bi Gan's recently-wrapped short film now has a poster, an official English title (A Short Story), and some vague details: it's a commission from pidan, a maker of cat supplies, and is a fantasy/love story with a black cat as its main character. The originally planned release date of March 24th has been pushed back with no new date set—speculation is that this is due to the plane crash in Guangxi, but I choose to imagine that Bi has run afoul of the censors with his cat-themed promotional film. Bi is also to start shooting a new feature later this year, but that's all we know about it so far.

To date, Bi Gan has made five films, only one of which is (slightly) over two hours. His first feature runs only 70 minutes and his shortest film so far is 1 minute long. Average length of a Bi Gan film to date: 68 minutes.

Don't know how I missed this, but Brady Corbet is in pre-production on his next film, titled The Brutalist, with a terrific cast including Joel Edgerton, Marion Cotillard, Mark Rylance, Sebastian Stan, Issach De Bankolé, Vanessa Kirby, Alessandro Nivola, as well as Vox Lux's Raffey Cassidy and Stacy Martin.

Any word on if this project is still happening? It still reads as in pre-production online with no updates since 2020, and I have to imagine this cast isn't going to wait around forever...

Karyn Kusama will direct a modern take on Dracula for Blumhouse.

This has been canceled, just three weeks before shooting was supposed to begin.

It’s a shame, because I happened to have heard from someone close to the production that the script and Kusama’s
plans for this would have been a very different approach to a Dracula movie, and I was looking forward to it.

Not defending their decision in any way, but wouldn't their vastly decreased relevancy (and, presumably, access to capital) make such a move more rather than less likely, from a pure business perspective? Like, if Viacom-beIN thinks the project is risky, they'd rationally be much more likely to balk and take their money back if their investment represents a large percentage of what they're willing to put into Miramax. Again, this absolutely sucks and Kusama and the cast/crew have been wronged for getting jilted this close to production, but I'm only disgusted, not surprised

Production on this was just suspended in relation to an unspecified "complaint" levied against someone in the cast or crew (allegedly not Ansari)

Lele Pons’ “Celoso.”... I don’t know anything about Rudy Mancuso apart from gathering that he’s also a YouTuber. But based on what he does with very little money here, give this guy $5 million to make a feature length musical and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gave us back a masterpiece....

You may well have wished this into being! Mancuso is set to write, direct, and compose an original musical for Amazon starring himself and, uh, Riverdale's Camila Mendes
