Have there been words on the video transfer for Iceman Cometh? I seem to remember the Vinegar Syndrome release will be from a new 2K restoration.

It's going to use the same 2K restoration that VS is using, though I imagine that they will also do there own additional restoration work that VS did.andyli wrote: Sat Sep 24, 2022 12:33 am Have there been words on the video transfer for Iceman Cometh? Looks like 88 got Bey Logan involved with the new extras for Supercop.

Really disappointed to hear that. Hoping it backfires on them and they have a change of heart. Definitely makes choosing other label's editions easier.

Guess this is as good a time as any to go region-free. Makes me disappointed Criterion couldn't get the rights to complete the trilogy over here

I have assume that they are mainly working with this guy due to his connections with the HK industry. However, if that is to be the case, why couldn't they just work with Tony Rayns or David Bordwell? These 2 have excellent connections to the industry and aren't creepy sex fiends as far as I know.

Re: 88 Films
On The Run is another excellent release from 88. The film's fatalism is almost a bit too much and I get why some people would be upset at the title card that precedes the end credits but I found it easy to overlook as the film already piled the misery on Yuen Biao aplenty and Alfred Cheung confirms in the interview in the book that the card was a concession to the mainland censors (it's on screen so briefly that it felt like an afterthought to me). The film is full of atmospheric and stunning shots, including the opening image of Pat Ha that communicates so much without a single line of dialogue. An excellent HK noir that's as far removed from the comedy of Yuen Biao's most other films as possible. If you like the guy as much as I do, this film and release is essential.

I'm so disappointed having supported all of their HK releases but I can't accept that mealy-mouthed apologism. I can only imagine he's laying the groundwork for Eureka to be working with him, too. I'll be voting with my wallet and communicating my distaste.Glowingwabbit wrote: Wed Oct 12, 2022 2:44 pm Wow! I'm surprised 88 decided to resume hiring him at this stage, unless they had assumed the dust had settled and didn't check his Twitter first?

Mike Leeder and Arne Venema won't be working with 88 anymore, though admittedly I don't believe that is too much of a loss considering Mike Leeder's sketchy past. However, it looks like OldPangYau might also not be involved with anymore future releases. This would be more of a devastating loss since he was a key component of these HK releases thanks to his work on finding better audio sources and alternate cuts (as well as creating excellent hybrid cuts).

OldPangYau is far and away the biggest loss from all this. His commentaries were superb.yoloswegmaster wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 2:35 pm Mike Leeder and Arne Venema won't be working with 88 anymore, though admittedly I don't believe that is too much of a loss considering Mike Leeder's sketchy past. Podcast on Fire will also not be working with 88 Films anymore:

88 didn't shoot themselves in the foot, they shot themselves in the face. Did they seriously think that they could work with Bey and no one would notice or that there would be no repercussions? What a bunch of door-knobs.

According to people on the 88 Films blu-ray.com forum thread, Vinegar Syndrome is going to be using Logan as well, although where that info was coming from is unclear.

Re: 88 Films
Hope it's not true. I was pleased when VS acknowledged the issue with New York Ninja (i.e. that its director has been a 30-year fugitive from Spanish justice since being charged with running a sex-trafficking ring) and in that case it was clear they had no idea about it, since it was only covered in Spanish media. Logan's misdeeds are hardly that obscure.

VS has expressed a willingness to release Clownhouse. So I could see them working with Bey Logan.

Re: 88 Films
Not being terribly familiar with the allegations against either of them:
1. How much worse is Bey Logan than Mike Leeder?
2. Have there been any formal charges or convictions against either of them?
3. Have either of them expressed contrition over their past actions, or taken steps to make things right?
I'm all for giving people second chances, but #3 is key

Re: 88 Films
Bey Logan has been accused of sexual assault and, if I'm remembering correctly, supplying victims to Weinstein. He very recently sent some harassing messages to a female reporter who worked on stories about him.
I think Leeder is a CCP apologist and has posted some lewd replies on sex workers/adult entertainers social media. Not sure if there is much more to Leeder's actions or not, but as it stands right now, Logan is by far the worst of the two.
Edited to add:
According to this, VS isn't working with Logan, but they have reached out to confirm if he owns some older supplemental material.

Re: 88 Films
1. Mike Leeder is just your average creepy sexpat who is strangely pro-CCP and against the HK protests, whereas Bey Logan was Harvey Weinstein's right-hand man and has been accused of sexual harassment by 7 different women.
2. No charges or convictions against Logan but I would imagine that it would be tough to get a conviction out of it, especially after a long period of time.
3. Leeder just pretends nothing has happened and has cleaned his social media feed up. Bey Logan on the other hand....
