With the 2 Murnaus, that leaves us with only 2 more silents.
As for "9 (4+5)": might this be one director who shot films under two different names? Detlev Sierck and Douglas Sirk? 4 Third Reich-era films (my choices: Schlussakkord, Zu neuen Ufern, Das Hofkonzert, La Habanera) and 5 Hollywood films. Just a guess.

No. But good pointJ Wilson wrote:Is the disparity the 32 listed as a multi-film set by one director? The Keaton set has 32 films, but Keaton did not direct them all. Arbuckle directed the shorts he made with Keaton prior to Keaton going solo.
Everyone's cold on the "one director under two names" thing.

Are you worried about MoC's HD transfers or HD discs in general? Presumably, Nick & Co. are creating HD transfers for regular DVDs, not releasing HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray discs.TheWatcher wrote:Also, as I'm not likely to be HD equipped in the near future and have no idea on what it all entails, can anyone tell me HD discs are playable in SD discs in the same manner as SACD hybrid discs are playable in normal CD players?
Classic! Right after the R1 version is shipped to me. All I was trying to do was add something that would eliminate my shipping costs for Yi Yi.peerpee wrote:4.) A new MoC Series catalogue (our second) will appear in Eureka's 2-disc "deluxe edition" release of JUNEBUG in August.

A ton of rampant speculation. Sorry!peerpee wrote:I'm not going to reveal anything yet, other than "3" refers to the Naruse (thought that would be obvious!). There's still a disparity in the numbers that no-one's picked up on.
To begin with I was assuming that the 4+5 indicated box sets. Of course it could simply be single releases with 4+5 shorter works by the same director... This would leave room for two more box sets, which could be Murnau and Flaherty (mentioned to be forthcoming in the past).
But still, who can think of a sound director with 9 short films to his/her credit that would be categorized as "fiction"... Godard? Most of Greenaways are already out on BFI, I think. Resnais or Marker? But their short films would be considered documentaries, or?
Eisenstein would be great, but that would give us to many silent films. I love Myra's Mizoguchi theory, but then of course we are back to the 4+5 being two box sets.

I'd say it's most likely that the 4+5 refers to two boxsets of one director's features, rather than 2 short film discs... That would mean that the 32, 3, and 4+5 cover all 4 boxsets on the schedule.Scharphedin2 wrote:To begin with I was assuming that the 4+5 indicated box sets. Actually, Godard might make sense for two feature boxes from the 80s and 90s, divided by rough period/theme markers. You could do:
JLG/JLG
2x50 Years of French Cinema
Germany Year 90 Nine Zero
Helas Pour Moi
The Kids Play Russian
Soft And Hard
Comment Ca Va?
Numero Deux
Ici et Ailleurs
You could conceivably take off The Kids Play Russian and add King Lear or Puissance de la Parole to the second box, though I'd say it's more likely the way I have it there. This is of course complete drooling speculation, but I really hope I'm right.

In guessing Eisenstein, I am assuming that Battleship Potemkin, October, Strike, Old and New, and Glumov's Diary would be the five silents. Nick is counting shorts when referring to the Keaton set, I'll bet that at least one or two of the films in the "5+4" bit are shorts as well.Scharphedin2 wrote:Eisenstein would be great, but that would give us to many silent films.

Sure, but that would give you too many silents in the equation. When you have subtracted the Keatons and the 2 Murnaus, you are left with only two more silents. We would need 5 more silents to build the Eisenstein sets.Jeff wrote:In guessing Eisenstein, I am assuming that Battleship Potemkin, October, Strike, Old and New, and Glumov's Diary would be the five silents. k - I haven't been that clear. Sorry! When I mentioned "9 (4 + 5)", pretend I just said "9" (even though it's likely to be split into two boxsets of 4 and 5).
Which... leaves one multi-disc boxset which is not a multi-film boxset.
Sorry for being tedious.
(and Eisenstein isn't on our radar at the moment)

Well, I can't get to sleep, what with "mystery Murnaus", missing Flahertys, mega Mizoguchi box sets, and numbers riddles with built-in disparities floating around in my little goldfish brain...
Only disparity I can see is that if all the numbers are added up, allowing for no overlap (so no silent documentary, and no silents/documentaries included in the 4+5, etc.)... then we end up with a total of only 52 titles (32 Keatons+Schreck's 2 (God help me) "mystery Murnaus"+Junebug+3 Naruses+F For Fake+2 complete and utter mystery silents (better be Nibelungen one of them) + 2 documentaries (better be cotton-pickin' Flaherty those ones)+9 by hitherto unknown director (certainly Mizoguchi) = 52). And, in that case, the 53rd release is absolutely obviously Von Sternberg's "Anatahan" (since Sternberg is the only director on MoC's customarily printed roster of directors to be included in the collection that has not yet been given a release, and "Anatahan" because... well, because, I say so, and it would make a great inclusion in the series).
And, now, please Mr. Sandman... and let me wake up tomorrow with an explanation from the horse's... himself, or, I will be absolutely strung out with delirium and start to come up with some real snazzy posts in this thread!!

Not!denti alligator wrote:Wait. Is JUNEBUG going to be an MoC title?
While everyone is struggling with Nick's teaser, I'd be delighted to know what's in the Mikio Naruse boxset. Presumably we can exclude When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, Floating Clouds, and Late Chrysanthemums...

It might be me jumping to conclusions. Nick writes in the beginning of the thread that Eureka will be releasing a double deluxe set of Junebug. It is all tangled up with the whole spiel about number of box sets and missing Murnaus, and so on, so maybe I got it wrong. Sorry.
If I remember correctly the Naruses are: Repast, Sound of the Mountain and Flowing. I think that was posted somewhere in a different thread a while ago.
Also, since I have now calmed down somewhat, I would venture a last guess on the multiple-disc-but-only-one-film-box, because certainly life is not perfect, and it therefore would not be The Human Condition... It will, however, without any question be Jacques Rivette's Out One

and probably would have said "our release of", or something, if it was MoC. just clearing that up.peerpee wrote:4.) A new MoC Series catalogue (our second) will appear in Eureka's 2-disc "deluxe edition" release of JUNEBUG in August.
PS. totally down with the Mizoguchi if it happens. hopefully a fantastic edition of The 47 Ronin would be contained somewhere in those 9.

Yes, that's what I thought as well. It MUST be OUT1 (pleasepleasepleaseplease!). "Celine et Julie" is coming from the BFI in September, so that is not it.davidhare wrote:Out One? (which version?) Or Celine et Julie vont en Bateau? (double disc box?)
I'm not sure whether I followed all the calculations correctly, but if after Murnau and Keaton are counted there are still two more silents, I think it could be the new "Nibelungen"-set.

that does seem fairly likely. what other multidisc single-film titles are even possible? satantango's coming from AE, berlin alexanderplatz is coming from criterion. how about cremaster hahahah?Tommaso wrote:Yes, that's what I thought as well. unless of course the multidisc single-film set simply refers to a normal-length film with encyclopediac extras.
