I'd love this to be the other Sixth Generation filmmakers that aren't Jia Zhangke, who is one of my favorite directors but also pretty well represented at this point (aside from his first four films that Janus hold now). Suzhou River has a new 4K restoration and would be a phenomenal candidate...

I'd also be cool with any of the Zhang Yimou titles that Imprint has released, but I think those won't see a UK/US release until they've been properly restored. or Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun and Devils on the Doorstep. many possibilities! just have no idea what's been restored/what's available

So guys please correct me if I’m wrong but does that make the current unannounced releases from different countries:

JAPAN - 15
AMERICA - 4 or 5*
ITALY - 3
CHINA - 2
FRANCE - 2
ESTONIA - 1

*couldn’t work it out from the earlier comments

I figured Estonia would be easy to work out looking at (usually very samey) lists of the best Estonian films and directors and comparing them to the letters on the clue photo… but nothing is jumping out.

Also my earlier thoughts about Poland are obviously not correct as no Polish flags have been posted… and Ashes n’ Diamonds is with SecondRun.

What a mystery!

I'm hoping against hope for some pre-war or even 50s and 60s Chinese films, though that seems like it might be outside of Radiance's target area.

I think that HOT is likely to be Dead Mountineer's Hotel, which has had a couple of English friendly Blu-Rays already so it would be great if the Estonian title was something like Leida Laius' Games for Schoolchildren. But that doesn't fit with anything.

I’m 100% with you but I doubt it’s happening. Maybe after a while they will dip their toe in older stuff like Indicator have done with their Mexican releases. Would love to be pleasantly surprised though!

And nice work Calvin! There’s some great Estonian films dying to be introduced to the West still. Maybe if this, potentially safer, one does well we might see more?

I'm excited for the potential Dead Mountaineer's Hotel release as I've wanted to see it for ages and I think it's a perfect fit for Radiance. I can see Kat Ellinger working on it much like she did the commentary for Eureka's The White Reindeer. it would be a great start for Estonia, who have gotten less love from the US/UK boutiques and the Camera Obscura release in Germany isn't likely to get nearly as much of an audience over here as a Radiance release would. hopefully it would open the door for some of the even more obscure titles after that

Apparently there is a videogame version of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel as well! If it doesn't get released soon I might have picked that up and played it in the interim! Although the game apparently has issues with glitches and game-breaking bugs which has led to its negative rating on Steam, although I also get the impression that the wild sci-fi twists of the story (which seem similar though tonally more extreme to Roadside Picnic) also played their part in the poor reception too!

The "A" is not part of the director's name. Also, 19-21 will be another boxset

That would be a G at the bottom then. He mention it's a subject in the discord.

Fran also said the films included in Radiance box sets will revolve more around a subject than anything else, so he could feasibly reveal the spines and we still wouldn't be able to guess the contents

Box sets.... a few ideas:

Early Francois Ozon (Collected Shorts, Water Drops on Burning Rocks, both cuts of Les amants criminels, Sitcom)
Ozon´s shorts seem to have been restored, there is a collection of shorts entitled Ozon: Remastered & Uncut - trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uy0XX-PSIo

Julio Medem

Christine Edzard

Eugène Green (A Religiosa Portuguesa, Le fils de Joseph, La sapienza)

There’s been a lot of expressed interest for including shorts on the discord. I specifically mentioned Green because one of his early shorts that only got subbed recently on back channels is the best thing I’ve seen from him

I keep hoping that a label will finally take on Suzuki’s A Tale of Sorrow and Sadness and Capone Cries a Lot, both of which, I believe, have HD masters. Two of his absolute best and most underseen in the West films

Some upcoming title leaks:

L'istruttoria è chiusa: dimentichi (Damiano Damiani)
Il giorno della civetta (Damiano Damiani)
Perché si uccide un magistrato (Damiano Damiani)
Le Combat dans l'île (Alain Cavalier)
Yakuza Graveyard (Kinji Fukasaku)

Well, I think that settles it. "Mafia" ends with an "A", all three Damiani films are Mafia related, and we have a three film boxed set whose subject ends in "A".

Or yakuza, since Yakuza Graveyard was just confirmed as an upcoming title...could be a set of Fukasaku or just general yakuza titles (most likely others from Toei at this point).

I think that was the source of the leak! A controlled leak, if you will.

Guessing the two sets might be a yakuza triple-bill and Damiani triple-bill...hopefully find out a week on Wednesday! :)

The trailer was supposed to come out on Wednesday with the new announcements, so I assume these five films are what's being announced, meaning the Fukasaku would not be part of a set

I've been wanting to see Damiani films for years, so a boxed set would be a dream come true. I was thinking that Arrow was about to let loose the floodgates after their release of The Witch, but I guess that was just a little trickle and this is the real deal.

Unless this was redacted more recently, I think Fran said he’s aiming for the first Wed of the month for announcements but that for this wave it’ll be the second Wed, Nov 9
