Immediately my thoughts too, especially since "DR BOX" was a clue on the cheat sheet. I wonder what the other films will be...lots of possibilities (e.g. Love in the City, Love and Larceny, A Difficult Life, The Monsters, Scent of a Woman). I assume it'll be another 3-film set, and presumably the one with the dark green OBI-strip that was recently teased (maybe spine numbers 19-21, IIRC?).

I'm happy whomever releases it here as Apichatpong is one of my absolute favourite directors and I'm very happy to see him represented here (this and Uncle Boonmee are my favourites of his).

That said, I had assumed Second Run would be upgrading this (though perhaps they dropped their guard and Radiance got it, after all they are generally concentrating on European films these days, particularly Czech/Slovak, Hungarian and Polish cinema). I know it was being restored, as were Blissfully Yours and Syndromes and a Century, but no updates other than vague mentions in press releases AFAIK. Very cool if Radiance are doing it, I'd be pleasantly surprised if they do!

Also great suggestions, been very patient with the Kiarostami and the Erice is a film I've failed to see (wrongly assumed someone like Criterion or BFI would release it).

Anyone know the UK rights for the Akerman and/or Deren films? Just wondered if those could be possibilities too.

Other possibilities: Wanda, Killer of Sheep, Touki Bouki, Blue Velvet (?!). Have a feeling the Godard is quite likely though, Fran is known to be a big fan and that's a big gap so far unfilled.

No, the BFI set only has some of the same films as the Flicker Alley set but not the Deren.

EDIT: Wait, I wonder if Fran was referring to the general list or the Director's list? Only saying because Buñuel's Viridiana is in the Director's list, and Buñuel is another favourite of Fran's...also 'BUN' was one of his clues on the forthcoming Radiance list (which I had assumed was Buñuel). Arrow actually released it on DVD back in the day...

I think that was sorted out by Gaumont a while ago - there's already been a (now OOP) UK DVD release from Artificial Eye and a US release from Olive Films. The difficulty is in presentation - I'm guessing it's limited to standard definition and the subtitling has proven difficult over the years. The (long OOP) Australian Madman release overseen by Adrian Martin is the best edition so far - it offered two sets of subtitles, one for the narration and one to identify the visual elements on screen.

Probably. But someone was able to overcome the difficulty of releasing Thom Andersen's Los Angeles Plays Itself, so who knows?

Interesting that it was cleared for a DVD release but I would still wager that the lack of an HD release is due to rights. I just can't find any logical reason why no company out there wouldn't be interested in releasing it besides rights issues. The same goes to the lack of HD releases for the Scorsese docs on the history of American and Italian cinema, as well as the wonderful Kevin Brownlow documentary on the silent era.

I think the Olive Films DVD is still in print in the US and I doubt they've given it a second thought since they released it. Ultimately, I think it's just not a very commercially attractive title for the amount of work and resource that would have to go into a decent release, but I'm hopeful that something will happen eventually.

FWIW, the DVD is probably not as bad as you'd think. I actually don't remember anymore but didn't Godard edit the whole thing on video cassette decks? Per his editor, he never wanted to upgrade the clips he used in his films, even when his editor offered to do so - he liked keeping the built-in limitations of video picture quality intact.

As per Fran on the discord group, Radiance don't have any Akerman at the moment. The BFI don't either.

In that case I'm leaning towards Tropical Malady, Killer of Sheep or Touki Bouki...each of which I'm very happy with if that's the case; been hoping for upgrades from Second Run and BFI, but still waiting...and nobody has picked up the Mambéty in the UK which is madness (I wrongly assumed Criterion would just port over theirs). Obviously still pretty happy if it turns out to be Buñuel or Lynch though.
