I actually hesitated to post my thoughts on Born in Flames yesterday because I figured there’d be a Criterion’d spine thread soon. Great acquisition

The Watermelon Woman is a wonderful acquisition too. Whenever that gets a spine number it’ll automatically be one of the best in the collection.

The Watermelon Woman 2k HD restoration - which was screened in 2016 - was funded by The Outfest UCLA Legacy Project for LGBTQIA+ Moving Image Preservation, which also did Desert Hearts and Paris is Burning. They also did Parting Glances which has not been released on blu-ray; the long out-of-print DVD was released by First Run Features, which also released the DVD for The Watermelon Woman restored version in 2017. That DVD is also out-of-print.

I believe that most likely a label like Altered Innocence could release it considering their generally more artsy films like Arrebato and Wild Reeds, so it wouldn't be out of the question. But on the idea of Criterion releasing it, there are currently only 35 films under the LGBTQ selection titled "Out at Criterion" and even then, "Victim" and "Je tu il elle" while "Happy Together" is a WoWKW set exclusive so now the total is 32, looking even closer the more recent spines have had a slight decrease in those kinds of film. The most amount I can find from _00 to _99 is 900-999 with 6 films so if we say that's the going average for 2 years (the average rate till the next hundredth) then we'd get at most 3 films per year, keywords being "at most". Again I must bring up Altered Innocence as a possible seller of The Watermelon Woman since starting at Spine #1,000 we've gotten, a documentary centered around drag shows in an era where they were frowned upon (which makes me wonder why no one I've seen has yet to request The Queen, 1968), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (we know that at least Water Lilies and Petite Maman are coming due to either streaming intros or direct confirmation), The Marlon Riggs Collection and Pariah releases (probably the biggest reason for believing Watermelon Woman has a chance besides Janus and UCLA), Rouge which features characters in drag based off what I've read, Pink Flamingos which was a highly demanded release and was celebrating it's anniversary, and The Power of the Dog (probably the one with the most subtext). In short, based off these titles, there's a chance of Watermelon Woman getting in but considering the recent releases (generally either newer films or docs), for the last time, Altered Innocence has a better chance of releasing it. why would Janus license out this title?

Not entirely sure but I was just bringing up a possibility that it could happen through other Blu-Ray companies, plus just because something is licensed by Janus Films, doesn't mean Criterion is bound to release it, though it is a requested one so who really knows, I guess I'll just have to sit and wait to prove if my inept theory is correct or not. Okay, but I think we're overlooking the possibility of Criterion releasing The Asthenic Syndrome, because at least The Watermelon Woman was released on a proper DVD, T.A.S. has only been released on RussianDVD.com in a DVD-R which for a variety of reasons sucks in both the quality of the resolution and the potential disc quality, I've been meaning to see it for a while so I can't speak personally but the fact that's the only release sucks considering it's appraisal so a Criterion would be really good, especially considering what they've done for Come and See and The Ascent with new restorations and extras. Maybe I'll check it out when it gets a proper restoration but in the meanwhile I guess the only option is a low quality YouTube upload. Thank you for reading.

It’s not surprising they’re acquiring recent additions to the S&S poll. I rented both The Watermelon Woman and Born in Flames together this week, after both made the recently revealed back 150 of the poll and were among the few unseen by me. Criterion/Janus capitalizing on the same publicity makes sense, either getting their hands on some of these available titles or being more transparent about what’s in the pipeline, and likely prioritizing their releases if they were already sitting on the rights

I saw Lizzie Borden at a screening of the Anthology Film Archive’s restoration of Regrouping. She didn’t mention anything about a home video release, but it wouldn’t surprise me given her relationship with Criterion. Pretty mind-bending documentary that feels like a feminist cross between Symbiopsychotaxiplasm and Leigh Ledare’s The Task.

it's impossible to search since the title is too short to pull up in our search system, but this is one I've been hoping for since joining the site (and well before that). I haven't revisited it in some time, but it was easily my favorite of the Dardennes' work, very glad it'll finally see the light of day soon...hopefully sooner rather than later on disc!

I think a year ago I was telling someone this could make a good double bill with Fritz Lang's You Only Live Once as an exploration on the limits of forgiveness, or rather what people are incapable of being or unwilling to do in accepting or believing in reform or redemption. It feels especially potent here in the U.S. because I don't feel that's a big part of American culture - just the opposite. It's a big reason why we have the death penalty, and vengeance seems inextricable from American life, from our mythology to our laws and politics.
