This was rumored to be pushed to a 2023 release as additional filming was done in May, but it appears that it will be released late this year in the U.S, as someone has found a theatrical release date in Italy scheduled for Jan 2023. Martin Scorsese is also credited as a co-screenwriter on the WGA site.

Martin Scorsese was asked about the status of this film at a discussion of the new Joanna Hogg film and said that it is currently being mixed and will be released in a few months. Not sure if he's talking about a theatrical or Cannes premiere but I'm still excited regardless.

It was being reported up until even a day ago that the film would be 3 hours and 54 minutes. Suddenly gutting 30 minutes seems unlikely. What happened here? Is this another Gangs of New York situation?

The 3h 54m runtime was just a rumor based off of comments made by Thierry Fremaux, who likely watched a WIP version a few months ago rather than the final version.

Hopefully this film will deliver with that amount of time in post-production. The Irishman was a glossal disappointment, not through the extensive length* but the laughable de-aging effects. De Niro stomping on that fellow was too silly on screen to make thr disbelief of De Niro playing 25. The WWII flashback look straight out of a poor copycat of Call of Duty.

*I know the length would get chuckle from my past comments here. Scorsese has deliever some of the fastest place three hour movies I have ever watched in my life. Silence didn't even bother me with the sluggish pacing, though I did not fully connect with the movie.

Thank God for Apple involvement with the project. Movies of this magnitude deserve to be seen on thr big screen. Netflix straight to streaming platform cheapens the projects they touched, as they become higher budget tv movies, not real cinema.

Don’t Apple and Netflix have similar models of limited theatrical windows for only specific titles for awards contention? Netflix released Scorsese’s last film theatrically under what appears to be a near-identical strategy - can you pinpoint the differences?

Also Netflix released a majority of their high-profile directors’ work theatrically last year. I’m not sure you know what you’re talking about.

This one is a bit different in that Apple is teaming with Paramount and giving it a proper theatrical release and not releasing it on streaming right away. Regardless, that quip about Netflix films not being "real cinema" is just your basic gatekeeping nonsense.

I believe all Netflix theatrical releases have occurred before their streaming dates, often times a month or more in advance, but yes I see that this one looks to be wide

Rodrigo Prieto really is one of the best cinematographers right now

Many cinematographers have had two (or more) movies in one year, but I don't know if any have had the visual and tonal range of Prieto doing this and Barbie back-to-back (and based on the marketing, he seems to have done excellent work on both).

Those train scenes are giving me a similar vibe to the arriving in town scenes in Heaven's Gate. Looks magnificent.

I'm sympathetic to that reaction. As much as his films were stylized, there always used to be a gritty realism to the look of his films, but I can't remember one that's looked "real" since the 90s. Although that probably has to do with how films are shot and processed now. It's a turnoff for me as well.
