I usually do a mix of both, a lot of times I just look and see what major films haven’t been released and guess it. This year Warner Bros. has been putting out UHD’s of a bunch of their big titles but we’ve heard nothing about The Searchers, so I guessed that the reason might be because Criterion is putting it out. Two Novembers ago, they put out Citizen Kane on UHD, a major WB owned title, last November it was Malcolm X, another big WB title. WB seems willing to license big stuff to Criterion, so if the pattern continues we‘ll might get another one, The Searchers seemed to fit the bill, as could North by Northwest, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Barry Lyndon, or a bunch of other stuff especially if we include MGM, RKO, and their other libraries, I could definitely seem Amadeus, for one.rrenault wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 1:09 pm P.S. Do people here tend to just make wishlists or are these educated guesses based on murmurs? For instance, I haven’t heard anything about The Searchers being with Criterion, even though that was mentioned above.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Warner doesn't actually own Amadeus, which they distribute under license from the Saul Zaentz Company, along with some other titles like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Mosquito Coast (plus ex-Criterion The Unbearable Lightness of Being). I don't know if that would prevent WB from sublicensing it, but it's not as cut-and-dry as Kane or other films that WB owns outright.bottlesofsmoke wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 4:24 pmWB seems willing to license big stuff to Criterion, so if the pattern continues we‘ll might get another one, The Searchers seemed to fit the bill, as could North by Northwest, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Barry Lyndon, or a bunch of other stuff especially if we include MGM, RKO, and their other libraries, I could definitely seem Amadeus, for one.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
There is a growing list of long-rumored WB owned titles supposedly with Criterion. A small sampling:
Adam’s Rib
Lusty Men
Lolita
Petulia
The Wild Bunch
The Devils
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
O Lucky Man
Mean Streets
Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
Dog Day Afternoon
Amadeus
The Sheltering Sky
Eyes Wide Shut
Hopefully, one of these will materialize soon.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
As I recall, Amadeus was confirmed a long time ago, but with the caveat that it needed an extensive 4K do-over that would delay its release to an unknown date. So whoever owns it apparently made that deal. The Fanciful Norwegian wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 4:53 pmWarner doesn't actually own Amadeus, which they distribute under license from the Saul Zaentz Company, along with some other titles like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Mosquito Coast (plus ex-Criterion The Unbearable Lightness of Being). A brand new 35mm print of Amadeus is playing at the Academy Film Museum later in the month, and I’m curious to see if it uses the 4K as its source. The restoration of Unbearable Lightness has been in the can for several years

On a side note, how did Amadeus end up with WB, considering everything else Orion released in the 80s is with MGM? Never mind, it looks like it’s due to the Zentz connection.bottlesofsmoke wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 4:24 pmI usually do a mix of both, a lot of times I just look and see what major films haven’t been released and guess it. I do remember being surprised Warner would license Malcolm X to Criterion. Sony seem to be hoarding anything remotely commercial or legacy-y for themselves, which probably means Criterion 4Ks of Punch Drunk-Love and The Age of Innocence aren’t in the cards.

Wasn’t Orion otherwise backed by WB in the late 70’s/early 80’s

Correct. Films like Wolfen and Prince of the City were made as a result of this alliance with WBflyonthewall2983 wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 9:16 pm Wasn’t Orion otherwise backed by WB in the late 70’s/early 80’s

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Warner kept most of the Orion films it distributed (excepting those that Orion didn't actually own, like Life of Brian and Hammett), but Amadeus wasn't one of them—they'd already split by that point. Orion was also the original distributor of The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
don't think the two films you compared have anything to do with each other. Werckmeister Harmonies is a much bigger deal than EO, the latter of which I'd say is a stretch to say was the Euro arthouse film, especially given this very label released Triangle of Sadness and The Worst Person in the World recently enough, the former on UHD.rrenault wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 1:09 pm I don’t know why, but for some reason I don’t see Werckmeister Harmonies getting a UHD, especially since they didn’t give EO a UHD, even though it was *the* European arthouse film of the last few years. I’m sure a Blue Velvet UHD will happen sooner or later though. Likewise The Graduate.
P.S. Do people here tend to just make wishlists or are these educated guesses based on murmurs? For instance, I haven’t heard anything about The Searchers being with Criterion, even though that was mentioned above.
that said it's usually guesswork - I have slowed down on the speculation roundup in the last few months (did anyone notice?) but I will say an alarming number of confirmations/speculations come from other labels (generally Kino) rather than Criterion themselves. it's relatively easy guesswork these days - if a studio like Warner, in its 100th anniversary, haven't released a film, it's a decent bet Criterion may be sitting on it. if it's a Paramount or Universal holding that KLSC didn't release, you can almost guarantee Criterion is sitting on it. The Searchers is one we haven't heard a peep out of Warner about, and that's a de facto WB film, not MGM or RKO. to not celebrate it on their big anniversary (especially given it was a really early Bluray release) would be really surprising. wouldn't be a shock if they licensed it to Criterion, who I dream of hiring Joseph McBride and Tag Gallagher to come in and talk about it.
it was never confirmed, only rumored by one blog that isn't particularly reputable. the reddit and twitter crowd took it and ran with it. that said, it is certainly a title Criterion would go for, and I'm sure they will do. but calling it "confirmed" is something that's annoyed me since day 1CSM126 wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 6:18 pm As I recall, Amadeus was confirmed a long time ago, but with the caveat that it needed an extensive 4K do-over that would delay its release to an unknown date.
