4k Restoration Trailer for The Mother and the Whore

Janus reuploaded a new trailer that can now be watched in 4K. Also, TIFF will be hosting the Jean Eustache retrospective throughout July.

Janus will be hosting a Eustache retrospective under the title "The Dirty Stories of Jean Eustache". It will begin touring at the Lincoln Center next month and then tour in select North American cities after.

As mentioned by Calvin in the Criterion Discussion & Speculation thread, Janus is involved in the Ousmane Sembene retrospective at the BFI and it's now been confirmed that the Film Forum in NYC will also be hosting a Sembene Retrospective in August/September.

At least a few of these have been semi-confirmed for a while, but here's further confirmation. In the credits for the "Look of Losey" supplement on Criterion's release of The Servant, his films Eve, Time Without Pity, and The Trout all come "courtesy of Janus Films":

Clips from all of these films are shown extensively in the supplement. Intriguingly, the clips from Time Without Pity appear to be in a different aspect ratio when compared to the Indicator:

Janus has had The Trout for years at this point. I’d love to see a lavish Criterion of Figures in a Landscape, but I’m not holding my breath, and Kino Lorber said it sold poorly

La Truite seems even more obscure than Figures and probably less revered, which is why I'm surprised to see the mocked-up Criterion cover that diamonds linked above. It is a film that is ripe for critical reappraisal, though, and Criterion loves them some Isabelle Huppert so who knows...

Indicator's release of Eve is outstanding but UK only. Maybe because Criterion has US rights? Indicator's Time Without Pity is also excellent and not region-specific so it seems like there is some reason why Eve is restricted.

The Go-Between is the obvious Losey title left for Criterion--Palme d'Or, Studio Canal relationship, two of the lead actors still living and maybe willing to talk about it. I have always hoped for an Eclipse-style box of his Hollywood films as well.

Now up on the Janus site. The runtime there is listed as 412 minutes, twelve shorter than what is listed on the NYFF site.

Janus distributes them but I don't think they've been digitally restored. The upcoming screenings at the BFI, the Film Forum, and the American Cinematheque are on 35mm.

This is insanely exciting. Sembene was one of the first directors to really expand my horizon on how to view the art form. Xala in particular I’d rank as one of the greatest comedies of all time.

This is the likely the reason, as the Siskel Center is only playing the films that have received 4K restorations. I did notice that neither the Film Forum and the AC are going to be screening Faat Kiné. Hopefully this is just an oversight.

I'd love to be wrong, but I doubt it is. The Film Forum announced their series awhile ago so they've had plenty of time to correct things if it were an oversight, plus they're listed as a partner on the BFI series so they've clearly been coordinating with each other. My guess is whatever print the BFI are screening can't travel to the U.S.

This was posted on the Toho Kingdom forum earlier today in regards to the Godzilla films from the Millenium-era:

Biollante was screened in Chicago earlier this year. (Source: https://musicboxtheatre.com/films-and-e ... -biollante ((also, I was there.))) I spoke to the organizer and she said Janus has theatrical rights to all of the Millennium films as of this year, including Final Wars, which was also screened. Interestingly enough, of the series, Destroyah, GMK, and Final Wars did have new translations, BUT they were commissioned by the Music Box Theater and not Janus. Biollante was just played off the Miramax BluRay.

These were with Sony previously, so I wonder if their rights to the Heisei-era films have lapsed as well.
