nominating...

best release:
Twilight (Second Run)
Worlds: Select Films by Ben Rivers (Second Run)
Hands Up!/Identification Marks: None (BFI)
Western Approaches (BFI)
Gregory's Girl (BFI)

the latter also for "best collection of short films"
Which release specifically are you nominating for Best Collection of Short Films? The two that seem most likely to me are Worlds and Western Approaches
I meant Worlds, my bad. this is what happens when you post and then keep adding stuff you forgot. will edit!

I had Twilight and what I cared to watch of it had terrible encoding. The new Arbelos BD has encoding by David MacKenzie and Arbelos's packaging is almost tempting me to buy the film again and give it another try. I really like Second Run as a label and some of their titles but they need to find a better authoring house because whoever did Twilight has let them down.
I don't own the Arbelos yet (as with all of their releases, its pricey) but the analytical/appreciative extras on the SR disc were pretty invaluable for me. I am not super sensitive to encoding issues so I was able to watch it. I do agree that I hope Second Run is able to get some assistance in the encoding department. masterpiece film, remains on my list but I'll get the Arbelos eventually, as they managed to include two super rare short films!

I forgot all of these were 2023, and none of them are up there yet. I'm formally nominating 12 (!) classic Hollywood titles from Indicator...

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife
Broken Lullaby
The Kiss Before the Mirror
State of the Union
Thunderbolt
Jet Pilot
Song of Songs
Night Has a Thousand Eyes
Desire
Love Me Tonight
Honor Amongst Lovers

I have yet to double dip on any of the Kino redos, so I wouldn't know whether they tend to be significant upgrades, PQ-wise (not that I'm a good judge of that anyway).

In terms of extras, it seems usually a toss-up, Kino having Imogen Sara Smith and Joe McBride, Indicator Nora Fiore and Kenny/Nehme or whatever.

I'm glad Indicator does them, though, as someone based in Europe, where the Kinos aren't dirt cheap.

And vice versa! I wound up offloading my KL Night of a Thousand Eyes in favor of the Indicator disc purely on brand-loyalty and esteem for the label, only to realize I preferred KL's extras, so I traded back. Some of these are toss-ups

I'm genuinely shocked by that, I thought the Kenny/Nehme commentary was very good (per their usual standard), and 24 minutes of Tony Rayns raving about John Farrow was awesome. granted, I did see Imogen Sara Smith did the Kino track...might be worth hearing for sure.

I don't think the Indicator/Kino overlap titles are necessarily different in terms of PQ, but I do usually prefer the tracks Indicator get, and am thankful for the booklets/radio plays/interviews with the actors they get as well (that Kino obviously don't have). I stand by my vote for all 12 titles, in support of Indicator doing more of them, and because they're very good editions. I know they're not the most popular on this forum (cause we tend to prefer new things instead of things other labels have done) but I'm very much in support and purchase them all.

For sure, like I said, I'm far more attracted to Indicator's brand aesthetic and ethos and all around product. It's just the (very) rare occasion where I was more interested in KL's commentary over the other option, but if I had more shelf space I'd double dip because that movie rules

Please specify which category you're nominating titles for, and anyone seconding should only do so if they agree with the category designation. If someone feels a title should be nominated in a different category, they should bring that up. I'll add titles to the first post once at least two people have agreed on a category for any given title.

for best commentary I nominate Frank Djeng on the Radiance A Moment of Romance - terrific track!

It's mostly just "Best Overall Release" or "Best Upgrade." We're also trying out a "Best Encoding" category this year but it hasn't had many takers so far

I'm also one of those who would need a crash course in what to look for there.

But then there are other categories which seem to do just fine without my input, like packaging.

I second the Djeng commentary btw.

Swo17, let me be more specific here.
I nominate Bluebeard's Eighth Wife for best upgrade and the rest for best releases. Thank you!

In that case, Bluebeard's Eighth Wife has a split vote for Best Upgrade vs. Best Overall Release. The next person to bring the release up in either category will be the tiebreaker, I guess

encding I can't really supply anything on unfortunately, but I will be voting for best packaging, book, on disc extra a little more extensively coming soon. trying to balance our 1980 project as well as catching up on my 2023 releases for this poll (and my goal in 2024 is to stay on top of things more!) some quick nominees:

best packaging:
Picnic at Hanging Rock (Second Sight)
The Lukas Moodysson Collection (Arrow)
Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest (Arrow)
Mexico Macabre (Indicator)
From Hollywood to Heaven (Indicator)

on disc extra:
David Desser on A Moment of Romance (Radiance)
The Boxing Ichthyologist by Michael Brooke on Identification Marks: None/Hands Up! (BFI)
Skolimowski A to Ż by Michael Brooke on EO (BFI)

I’ll nominate for Best Overall Release and Best Collection of Short Films:
Soundies: The Ultimate Collection

And for Best Upgrade
Robin Hood / The Black Pirate (Cohen) - Though only Robin Hood is an upgrade, The Black Pirate had a Blu-ray release already
The Three Musketeers / The Man in the Iron Mask (Cohen)

I won’t say I know much about encoding but I’ll nominate Arbelos’ Twilight not only because it’s a good encode but because it was also much better Second Run’s encode for it which gives it a couple extra points in my eyes.

I'm glad we're getting a lot more voting options this year - I mostly will just use them as an excuse to write long form and exhaustively thank the contributors...certainly many of which either post or lurk here. trying to get in some last minute commentary and booklet entries

As a reminder, Round 1 ends on the 15th, at which point voting will begin and the ballot can no longer be changed. Please look closely at the ballot in the first post. If there is anything you would like to be able to vote for that is not listed there, it will need to receive both a nomination and a second before the end of the day on the 15th to qualify. If you've already mentioned something as a nomination and it doesn't seem to have garnered any interest in the form of a second, it may help for you to explain why you think something is worth others' attention.

For my part, I would like to nominate all of the following (or second, if indicated):
