I'd love this to be the other Sixth Generation filmmakers that aren't Jia Zhangke, who is one of my favorite directors but also pretty well represented at this point (aside from his first four films that Janus hold now). Suzhou River has a new 4K restoration and would be a phenomenal candidate...

I'd also be cool with any of the Zhang Yimou titles that Imprint has released, but I think those won't see a UK/US release until they've been properly restored. or Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun and Devils on the Doorstep. many possibilities! just have no idea what's been restored/what's available

Spectrum released In the Heat of the Sun a couple of years back, but with French subtitles only (in a double-set with The Emperor's Shadow). In fact I keep noticing Spectrum and other French labels like Carlotta release interesting Asian titles I'd love to see released in the UK, and wonder what's stopping English-language labels from doing the same...

Oh wow, that’s cool! I saw it in film school at a special event where and author was talking about it. But it didn’t have subtitles and I was going to work with him to make them.
I’d love to know what the deal is with the rights to his films. It just doesn’t make sense that no one wants to put them out.

France has had releases of East Asian films on home video since at least the early days of DVD, that have never seen a corresponding release in english-speaking regions; especially from Japan and most without english subtitles. It’s unfortunately nothing new, and no doubt down to rights issues and licensing costs.

The best news. I was really hoping they would do something like this, as they seemed like the label who would do it most passionately (Criterion, Eureka and Arrow have dabbled, but never given him the attention he clearly deserves). The Man Who Left His Will on Film is specifically one of Fran's dream titles, so I'm glad he got there in the end!

I wonder how big a collection they are planning? I imagine it will at least include Death by Hanging, Boy and The Ceremony like the old Carlotta set, and hopefully add some others too (lots of brilliant options of course, up to and including his final film Taboo).

I don’t think The Catch has ever been with Janus, correct? It’s out on a very shitty French DVD, I thought. That and Band of Ninja would be wonderful

Band of Ninja you’d think would do well due to its historical importance right? I’m not sure who has The Catch to be honest! I mentioned it for selfish reasons as it’s one of the few I missed seeing in a retrospective a few years back.

I enjoy Max Mon Amour quite a bit. Certainly an outlier among his films for many reasons, but enjoyable if you go along with its internal logic

The Man From Majorca was guessed elsewhere by Rapta and I think that's a good idea. I would be game for UK editions of Haxan, The Phantom Carriage, or if we really wanna be more obvious, Hour of the Wolf. but I think the first two will be MOC, the latter...well, I just hope it gets its own edition with actual extras from someone sometime. of course, it could be a Swedish film I've never heard of, which this label excels at. would be happy with that too

correct, they haven't put out either. my guess is Eureka or Radiance will put out a UK edition. Eureka obviously specializes in silents but have never licensed from Svensk Filmindustri (unless I'm forgetting) whereas Radiance put out The Man on the Roof from them. both would definitely fit the bill of "landmark silent" but I'm still in the camp that believes it'll be A Page of Madness or L'Inferno, given their Japanese and Italian focuses. I'd be happy with any of these four though, mind you
