Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
I've learned with Studio Canal that I'll just have to wait for an additional 6-12 months before the standard edition appears but the frustrating thing is that they don't seem to issue those until after the tat stuff has sold out which can take longer than 6 months (Lavender Hill Mob Tat Edition is still in print). Second Sight deserve some credit for giving their customers all the choices upfront.

It's a chore at times in the UK, but Canal often have French and/or German standard alternatives (like for this upcoming Third Man).

Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
JPC.de has it for 30% off, so it's almost the same price with the French one. I wonder if the release will have English subs, usually they do when it's released in all 3 markets.

I assume Lionsgate will be releasing the exact same disc, probably in an Amazon exclusive steelbook, later this year/early next year.

Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
A BR member went to a theatrical screening of the 4K restoration of The Third Man and confirmed that SC reused the poor audio mix.
Here’s the restoration info they added to the screening (translated from German): "The Third Man" underwent an elaborate 4K restoration in 2015 on behalf of Studiocanal at Deluxe in Great Britain. Since there was no original negative, the 4K scan was created from a fine-grained original positive after a careful comparison of the available materials. Release print copies were used as a reference for light determination.

The Lion in Winter and a few Hitchcock films like Rich and Strange got rated by the BBFC. Lion is probably getting a 4K in the next few months and Optimum's old DVD set of early Hitchcock a BD upgrade.

The other Hitchcock’s are:
The Ring
The Manxman
Champagne
So alas, nothing new to Blu.

Juno and the Paycock is new. I also have to assume the new restoration of the sound version of Blackmail that is premiering at Lumière festival will be included in the set. The Kino release was sourced from an ancient master and in the wrong aspect ratio.

Lion in Winter is indeed getting a 4K and can already be ordered in Germany.

Juno and the Paycock badly needs a restoration. I’ve often wondered if the film is so bad because the poor elements obscure its charms.

Does anyone know what the complete content of this UK blu-ray box of Hitchcocks will be then?A Tempted Christ wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 1:53 pmJuno and the Paycock is new. Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
The original article said it's going to feature 10 films. All 9 films in Optimum's The Early Hitchcock Collection DVD set (The Ring, The Farmer's Wife, Champagne, The Manxman, Blackmail, Murder!, The Skin Game, Rich and Strange and Number Seventeen) which were also previously licensed to Kino will appear in the new set too. There was speculation about the last film and whether it was going to be a new title or just an alternate version of either Blackmail (sound version) or Murder! (German version titled Mary) but StudioCanal has recently submitted Juno and the Paycock to BBFC so it's guaranteed to be the final film in the set.

When are we going to see The Pleasure Garden? Reportedly, that film benefitted the most from the 9 silent restorations - yet, it's the only film not available. What up with that?

It's owned by ITV, who no UK label has a licensing deal with since Network no longer exist. When Network were alive, the hold up was over funding to record a score

From the silent film era to the first talkies, this 11-disc set also contains a newly commissioned, full-length documentary, Becoming Hitchcock, exploring the director’s first sound picture, Blackmail. BRAND-NEW DOCUMENTARY - BECOMING HITCHCOCK THE LEGACY OF BLACKMAIL (2024) Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, Narrated by Elvis Mitchell, Produced by Studiocanal in association with Nedland Films, 72min.BECOMING HITCHCOCK – THE LEGACY OF BLACKMAIL, a brand new 72-minute documentary from award-winning filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau (Faye, Music by John Williams, Five Came Back) and narrated by historian, critic and filmmaker Elvis Mitchell, reflects the development of Alfred Hitchcock’s signature style, through the making of one of his benchmark films, Blackmail (1929). The documentary highlights the birth of the “Hitchcock Touch” at a period when talking pictures first emerged and explores his trademark themes, such as murder, suspense and cool blondes. While focusing on Blackmail, the documentary reveals how this film also foreshadows the director’s later masterpieces, from Psycho to North by Northwest and from The Birds to Frenzy.

I assume there are more on-disc extras? Was hoping to ditch all the individual KLSC releases

This is really the year for big director focused box sets isn’t it? Anyways never got any of Kino’s Hitchcock discs so this will be a good purchase even if the price is a bit steep.

Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
Since Blackmail is the only title I want, I'm left hoping that Kino port this over individually as an upgrade. If not, I can live with their older disc since I'm only interested in the silent version anyway.

Re: Studio Canal / Kinowelt / Optimum
really hoping they bring over the KLSC extras, it'd be really great to not have two copies of a lot of these...very lesser movies for completionist sake. the KLSC commentaries are good for what you can talk about these, though the Murder one is particularly good
