Yeah, he really went that extra mile in describing every nuance of the extras, where a lazier reviewer might have just listed the specs from the Criterion press release. =D>
Perhaps I'm being too harsh. Michael did have a deadline to make, since the release date is nearly upon us: September 5th.
To an untrained eye it appears as though he's just opened up an old text file with a review of Seven Samurai and added two short paragraphs for sound and vision. To an untrained eye.
Hmmm - over a week later and nowhere else has got a review up yet. Do you reckon they've actually got a copy, or just looked at the specs on the site, hedged their bets that Criterion weren't going to fuck it up and dashed that off so as to get the "exclusive"?

That review is completely bogus.
The quotation from the film at the top of the review is taken from the OLD subtitle translation, not the new one. A clear giveaway. Add to that the fact that the review of the transfer is laughably vague and that there's no reason why Criterion would give him an exclusive review copy ahead of anybody else. Total B.S.
"Knowing Criterion's commitment and their diligent work ethic we expected a reparatory improvement, but what they produced has far outweighed any expectations fans could have hoped for..."
Only three screencaps of actual action? It's a 3.5 hour epic Gary, why not more? Aside from Blade Runner, this is the dvd release event of the year. Cut us a break, would you please...
Just wanted to let you know I recently posted a review of this set over at DVD Talk.
I also included a few small screenshots and comparisons with the old 1998 Criterion release, though they're nowhere near as spiffy as the ones from DVD Beaver's excellent review.
