Awards Season 2024

#51 Post by Matt » Fri Oct 11, 2024 12:44 am

I didn’t realize that there are two Saoirse Ronan movies this year and I honestly thought, until Never Cursed’s post on the film in the Films of 2024, that Blitz was the one where she plays a woman living on the Orkney islands after rehab. That’s The Outrun, which apparently already opened in the US last week.

Is there any film (other than maybe the Jesse Eisenberg film) out of Sundance this year that has made any kind of ripple in the awards season waters? I looked at the list of award-winners and didn’t recognize a single title.

One of the documentaries (Gaucho Gaucho, Union if anyone picks it up) has to be a serious contender, and I Saw The TV Glow will surely be a main player in the indie awards circuit. But most of the dramatic competition/premiere category this year either flopped hard or was never destined for that kind of attention.

What if Eastwood saves the day and Juror #2 is another Million Dollar Baby?
Like a bad comedy skit, this year won’t stop: WB is dumping this with no ad campaign whatsoever in 50 theaters on Nov 1st, and with no plans to expand. So no, this isn’t coming to save us

Damn. An ignominious end to a long, albeit frustrating, directorial career

Awards Season 2024

I don’t know how much credence I give to the people reporting this, but I do wonder if the film is testing poorly or they’re just waiting to see what kind of word-of-mouth it gets. Or more likely they realize there is just no theatrical market anymore for films targeted to older audiences. His pre-pandemic films performed respectably, if not profitably.

Poor Nicholas Hoult has had major roles in films for over 20 years and he just cannot quite break through to the A list.

Eastwood’s films have actually been pretty guaranteed money makers for awhile though this does feel like WB not knowing how to market him any longer.

They always came in under budget, and he’s an excellent planner who never shoots excessive numbers of takes or deviates from scripts. Some did very poorly on their initial release, notably White Hunter, Black Heart and his 2 films with Matt Damon

Cynthia Erivo posted a completely unhinged response to the fan edit that attempted to fix the awful and much-derided official movie poster so that it actually looked like the original artwork

Alienating fans by scolding them is certainly a choice.

Everyone involved in this movie is working so hard to make sure that no one wants to see it.

Not from this year obviously, but I was reading Andrew Sarris and was tickled to learn that at the DGA awards for 1966, Mike Nichols’ name was erroneously read for Virginia Woolf and he had to be stopped from collecting for the real winner, Fred Zinnemann. Guess Beatty and Dunaway can hope their mishap will be as forgotten as this one was!

I predict a very satisfying year of winners nonetheless, and Conan will kill it - seems like a win-win

Someone on another forum mentioned bringing Paul Rudd on stage to introduce one of those tribute to the movies montages only to have that clip from Mac & Me play instead, and now I'll be crushed if this doesn't happen.

Jimmy Kimmel already did that carry over joke so well a few years ago.
