I literally rewatched it like a month ago and still have no clue what I'm supposed to be looking at here

The cover art should try at least to capture something of a film's essence (and personally I don't mind if it's not culled from the
film itself... some of the poster art from eastern Europe is wonderfully creative and interesting). I wouldn't even say that some
of these wouldn't have artistic merit if taken on their own, but these recent examples (and I stand accused of posting quite a few
recently) look alternatively lazy or baffling to my eye.

Speaking of bad cover art for John Schlesinger movies, I saw this one a couple days ago for Pacific Heights. Why is there no Modine on the cover?

That would be reflective of Modine's career, who, unlike the other two stars, never really made it to A-list status. You also just need the damsel in distress menaced by the villain, you don't also need her husband (looking scared?).

I like this kind of painterly, lurid style though and it's not like this is one of Schlesinger's art house efforts.

I feel like I've seen dozens of similar ones for Shout releases.

Yeah, it's either by Drew Struzan or someone imitating his style. I still like it either way!

That Inserts cover was on the original MGM DVD, so sadly no one bothered to improve it (Twilight Time's cover was slightly better but still a Twilight Time cover). I'm kind of amazed it got rereleased on Blu-ray though-- don't let the cover deter you, it's a fantastic film!

It really does remind me of a specific Shout cover, color palette, creepy towering villain and all, to the point I thought this was it before seeing the title was in German, but I can't recall which one.

The Inserts cover is terrible and considering the movie has a first rate ensemble cast, it feels like a lost (marketing) opportunity to only credid Dreyfuss.

It looks similar to People Under The Stairs.

Both are by the same artist, Justin Osbourn slasherdesign.com

He's done a lot of great artwork for Scream, Arrow, NECA, and Shudder

Not a fan of the movie, but I wouldn't buy it based on the cover alone. They look a bit like cardboard
cutouts that are about to be engulfed by a huge explosion.

I knew that had to be an mfunk post because that’s a good cover especially if you mentally erase the stuff added as part of the advert.

I'm fine with the artwork, so I ordered them, though I did not pay close enough attention to them to notice that Volume 2 front cover doesn't actually have the number 2 printed on it. It just has Vol next to Thurman holding up two fingers. It was the first thing I noticed when I received and held my copies in hand, and now it bothers me. Especially since Vol 1 does have the number, I guess they did not find a shot with one finger gesture.

I know it’s a pretty bad cover but like I said in the VS thread it’s also something that Norm probably would’ve loved or at the very least been able to make a good story out of about him accidentally buying his own movie because he thought it was an gay adult film and being like “Hey I recognize that guy,” so I think it’s appropriate towards Norm’s brand of oddball humor.

It’s such a bad cover that I may not buy the movie if the non-slip image is the same, and I generally think not liking cover art is the dumbest reason to skip a release

That's just the slipcase. This is the slipcover:

The actual cover remains a mystery

Do VS no longer have reverse covers with the theatrical poster? The two HK titles I bought from them did.

And there I was thinking that Severin's Russ Meyer releases would be the bustiest covers of the year! Are the nipples on that Dirty Work cover intended to appear like eyes hypnotically burning into one's soul?

(Oh my God, it isn't going to be embossed is it?)

The slipcase is described as "spot gloss." A shame they couldn't go full Wooly Willy with it.
