I feel like I’d want a few years’ distance from 2025 before doing that. I remember seeing people vote for Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Promising Young Woman on the Sight and Sound poll a couple years ago and feeling a little gross about it.

We did something similar with the first half of the ’10s, I think. I wouldn’t mind it because I am impossibly behind watching more recent films, so it’d be a good excuse

We did, but I don't love the idea because it arbitrarily favors one time period over others. For instance, no one will ever be clamoring to do the last half of a decade by itself, or any 25-year period prior to 2020-2024.

On the current schedule of the projects I'm running, we'll be doing the 2000s next year, the 2010s in 2027, and the 2020s from July 2030 to June 2031. I'm not opposed to someone else running a side project, though if we did that, I'd personally be more interested in another auteur or genre list project

Could it be possible to do something like the AFI’s 100 Best American Movies where the forum votes on the best films from different cultures and regions since it allows people a chance to explore other countries’ cinematic histories that they otherwise not be familiar with?

That's another good option. We previously did a French New Wave list

It’s a good idea, but realistically it would need to be France, Italy, or Japan

I was also thinking that places like India, Germany, Russia, and maybe Hong Kong or Mexico could fit that mold since they all have strong film industries with enough notable films to create some interesting ballots.

In addition to the ones Domino suggests, I think Germany could sustain a top 100 (I mean, list every Fassbinder and you're halfway there). Maybe the UK too?

Some of the others that TechnicolorAcid suggested seem a little too niche (though I don't doubt that there's plenty there for enthusiasts). Covering larger regions might work. One list for Latin America, one for Eastern Europe, etc.

I’ve been thinking another tv list might be fun. I’m really sad that I missed out on the Simpsons one and think there’s a few options that are viable especially if spin-offs and analogous series are included such as an all Star Trek list or something that would include Twilight Zone and Outer Limits.

I'm up for a side project. To be honest, I'm feeling slightly jaded by only doing decade and year lists. Don't get me wrong, they absolutely need to continue. It's just for the past 4-5 years since I joined the site, I've done most of my movie-watching with in sync with them...50s in 2020, 60s in 2021-22, up to the present. They've been terrific for recommendations. However, lately I've been in the mood for pre-widescreen classics, simply because I haven't watched many in the past few years and I miss them (I've watched as many 40s films in the last 9 days as I did in all of 2023-24, according to my LB diary). So yeah, if someone wants to host a brief side project for a director, genre, or country/region, as long as it keeps serving my current viewing desire, count me in!

It'd be a larger undertaking, but I also feel like the Musicals Redux project would be rich. Here are just a few ideas I had written down years back:

-P&P
-Altman
-Frank Tashlin - including shorts/cartoons
-Buster Keaton
-Marlon Brando (star)
-Elliott Gould (star)
-Soderbergh
-Anthony Mann
-Spielberg

-FINAL features
-Shorts
-Costume drama
-Prison/incarceration
-Rom com
-Action
-James Bond

I would contribute extensively to a Hong Kong list if we did one. Be a good way to get back into watching HK films.

Would it be a toxic idea to combine China, HK and Taiwan?

We could do an East Asian Country List combining all them together (barring Japan which obviously deserves it’s own individual list) but that’ll be determined by how well the current Czech and/or Slovak list does and also if my second, much larger list gathers enough discussion to warrant similar projects. So if that happens I’ll do an East Asian project maybe.

Not at all, especially as they share a lot of filmic traditions, and talent has migrated among the three. It’d be annoying to have to exclude pretty much all of King Hu, say, or to cut out most of Tsui’s post-handover work. And you can’t meaningfully track a genre like wuxia without access to all three film industries. So, yeah, doing a Chinese Film list is a fine idea (even if it guarantees that the final list will favour the art house cinema of Taiwan and China over the more low-brow populist HK stuff despite the latter’s enormous vitality).

I can’t remember how we did this last time: do we do the general 90s list after 1999? How long do we get for that one? Hoping to catch up with some the unseen films that finished well in the yearly tallies

With the current schedule we finish surveying the last year of each decade in November, and then spend December and January participating in the decade poll.

Yeah, I made this request in a previous year because it lets people have a fallow month in December for seasonal viewing and/or time with family, then you can go hard in January. It then makes each decade a nice, round 12 months too.

I know we've done a horror list in the past, but have we considered 'vampires' as a specific sub-genre? As a starting point you have this list - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vampire_films

I like this idea. I’d be happy to run a list in the new year if more people are interested.

It would get me to finally pull the trigger on Second Run’s Vampir Cuadecuc disc.

I think there is enough mileage in this given the strong number of films - it helped that I watched Daughters of Darkness (definitely high in any list) and 30 Days of Night (decent) on the same day.

It doesn’t fill me with enthusiasm but at minimum I’m sure I could cobble together a top ten if it ends up happening. You’re gonna have to be ready for a lot of people to try to vote for vampire movies which are not vampire movies, though!

The Lists Project

#2550 Post by Matt »

It’s the old “if you think it fits, vote for it” thing, I guess. If someone can make a convincing case for a film, more power to them. I had a film professor once tell me Persona is a vampire film.

I think it would work best as a mini-list—submit your top ten. Maybe starting when the year-end and Made in China lists are done. And maybe with a runoff vote. I’ll make a poll.
