Nothing will ever dethrone La fille aux yeux d'or but whatever film you think is the second-worst Nouvelle Vague film is wrong if it isn’t this. Truly, madly, deeply, all-encompassingly bad. Once again, a lot of these French New Wave also-rans were forgotten for a reason!

La mort de Belle (Édouard Molinaro 1961)
Top billed Alexandra Stewart is killed within two minutes of the film starting in this bait and switch tracking the alleged outrage of a viewing audience as an obviously innocent man is railroaded by his community and the authorities into being made the scapegoat. This kind of plot is annoying enough, but oh ho this movie ends with one of the biggest Fuck Yous to an audience I’ve ever seen, with the whole film pivoting into nothing more than a cheap bit of provocation masquerading as Serious. Molinaro had a decent string of noirs in this era (especially Un témoin dans la ville), but this is the worst by far.

Not if you don't like Tim Roth, who is the only person in every section of the film. I'll pick it up to complete my Tarantino collection.

The funny thing is that I love Reservoir Dogs (it's the only Tarantino film I really care for) in spite of Roth. I might just watch it if it pops up on a free streaming service.

It’s an HBO-held title which falls under WB’s umbrella, but I think they’ve been loathe to license out stuff. Such an amazing film. One of the greatest movies about Los Angeles

I remember going in so jazzed for this, high off the indy zing of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, In The Soup, and Gas Food Lodging (although, never El Mariachi, or any Rondriguez picture except The Faculty).

Most of them, back then, could do no wrong in my mind.

The lights went down, I dug into my corn…and I fucking hated every second of it.

Every actor was pitched to vaudevillian levels of annoying, the suspense was slop and not a single joke landed. Worst of all, I got palpable sense of hipster condescension from each filmmaker, like they were pulling a fast one on the audience.

But if your comedy ain’t funny and your suspense puts people to sleep because it’s impossible to emotionally invest in screeching assholes, the whole thing just comes out a turd.

I haven’t seen it since, but based on the strong emotional reaction I still seem to have, I suggest you give this a wide berth.

It's fine? As a multi-director roundabout it's about what you'd expect given the talent at hand (the Anders portion has fared better with age, the Rodriguez will always be a favorite of mine for being a Looney Tunes cartoon, the Rockwell a little plodding but enjoyable thanks to Jennifer Beals, and the Tarantino basically that one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents with a wonderful ending). It might grind most, but so did the 90's for most of the ones who lived through it (it was all we had!). Seeing Roth navigate the direction of each director/writing is something I've grown to appreciate since being pretty disappointed upon first viewing, but at least you can tell most of everyone is having a good enough time, as it feels like a goofy victory lap after the runaway success of Pulp Fiction.

It might be cheap to say but Rodriguez and Tarantino have the best segments. For the former it's a level of increasingly bizarre and graphic instances building up that I would say he hadn't done in any of his other films at least not to the strangely childish degree like how things in Planet Terror and the Machete films play out.

Tarantino's is def an ego trip filled segment where everyone is just giving fart sniffing performances but the fun of it admittedly rubs off as something enjoyable. Now is the film as a whole worth owning? Eh. Only if you're a RR/QT completist. The other segments are just completely unmemorable.

I usually bracket Four Rooms together with mostly forgotten Dudley Moore comedy Blame It On The Bellboy. It would not surprise me if Tim Roth was influenced by Bronson Pinchot in his annoying performance!
