Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I'll back up Belly Beta's post and say that one of those was confirmed to me from a reliable person and I saw some things that probably indicate that another one is also coming. So I wouldn't be surprised if all three pan out. (along with a 90s WB, well New Line, comedy that I'm not kidding and playing about)

Thinking Dumb and Dumber, but knowing their love of John Waters, it could be Serial Mom

Serial Mom isn't New Line, is it? Whereas these are:
Austin Powers
The Wedding Singer
The Mask
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Wag the Dog
Loaded Weapon 1
Pump Up the Volume

You’re right. It was Savoy, which is now defunct, and their library is with Universalswo17 wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 4:21 am Serial Mom isn't New Line, is it? Whereas these are:

This has long been hinted. I’d love to see Reginald Hudlin’s MFA thesis film that it’s basically a remake of

Legit would love to see what they do with Austin Powers. Wedding Singer kinda rules too.swo17 wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 4:21 am Serial Mom isn't New Line, is it? Whereas these are:

According to a comment on Reddit, Don McKellar confirmed during a Q&A that Last Night is going to be released by Criterion.

Could this be Angus? Janus logged it on Letterboxd and it doesn’t seem to have had a good release due to music rights.dwk wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 3:12 am I'll back up Belly Beta's post and say that one of those was confirmed to me from a reliable person and I saw some things that probably indicate that another one is also coming. Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Has it? I know that I kept guessing it in the monthly speculation thread, but, at the time I personally had nothing to go on except the run of New Line titles they were releasing. Eventually I stopped and, well...beamish14 wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 4:25 amcdnchris wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 4:12 amI swear this one was hinted at before. His thesis film would be a great extra, if possible.

I think Austin Powers and Wedding Singer match Criterion (maybe I'm biased because Austin Powers is one of my kick back and relax movies and Wedding Singer is one of my favorite movies) and I'd be down for them. I couldn't see Criterion doing Dumb And Dumber or The Mask. Did anyone guess Friday or is that no longer with New Line?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I've pretty much admitted what it is I was told in my initial post and quote of beamish's post (don't know why I just didn't state the title outright, but I really don't want to get someone in trouble, even if it is something I learned secondhand. I guess I am just being overly cautious due to things like Lee Kline's public instagram account going private after getting cited as a source for some upcoming titles.)

Are we absolutely certain it won’t be Joan Micklin Silver’s Big Girls Don’t Cry… They Get Even?
I’m kidding. I think. Who knows these days.

Actually, Deliverance has been on the channel (don't remember seeing Point Blank), as has Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More. But I have long been hoping for Hope & Glory.FrauBlucher wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 2:54 am Being the two Boorman films have not been previously linked to Criterion maybe a new deal has been struck
I find it hard to believe that Austin Powers, House Party or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would get released these days without their sequels.
Magnolia & Boogie Nights aren't comedies, so my guesses for top candidates:
Pump Up The Volume
Hangin' With The Homeboys
Johnny Stecchino
Pleasantville

Is there another Pump up the Volume I don’t know about that’s a comedy?

I still haven't seen it, though I had the soundtrack on cd. Someone else listed it prior to me and its primary category on IMDB is teen comedy.

I assume that Arrow will to the Turtles trilogy. I have less faith that Criterion would bother with the House Party sequels, but I could see them including part 2.
Hangin' with the Homeboys does seem like something that Criterion would pick up, but I haven't seen it since the VHS days and I don't know how it has held up.
While on the topic of Warner rumors, anyone hear any rumblings about Lolita or Empire of the Sun?
Oh, and Point Blank has been on the channel a number of times.

Arguably a comedy-drama. Pretty remarkable film that is still incredibly relevant regarding First Amendment rights as they pertain to teenagers. One of the best soundtracks ever, tooCSM126 wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 6:17 pm Is there another Pump up the Volume I don’t know about that’s a comedy?
Allan Moyle’s first feature, The Rubber Gun, is touring in a 4K restoration and will probably be released by Canadian International.

Peter Weir’s Fearless and The Year of Living Dangerously are 2 WB titles that I keep hoping will land at Criterion

I wonder if anyone keeps tracks of physical releases that were first on the channel. Too lazy to do it myself, but would be very interesting to see.
