For those wondering: a source confirmed that Criterion has had the rights for six years and BFI has no plans to release it on Blu-Ray/4K in the UK despite the DVD still being in print, implying Criterion will probably be releasing it in the UK themselves as well

How many years we’ve been waiting for two films left over from the original WB deal, Captain Blood and O Lucky Man?

I mean, there’s at least one title from the initial list of MGM acquisitions almost two decades ago that still hasn’t materialized, so get in line (also, aren’t those speculation not confirmed titles?)

All of the other WB titles on that list has been released, so I think that list is pretty much as good as confirmed.

I do wonder if O Lucky Man is being held up because they are trying to do a set of all three of the films (Kino's license for Britannia Hospital expired a couple year back.)

they could've released it on Bluray and upgraded it to 4K in that time. I'll slightly give them a pass on that one, as Scorcese is actually involved with his releases and it's evident he may have prioritized After Hours, Mean Streets, et al. for something like Winchester '73 or Paper Moon where it's obvious they sat on the rights for a really long time, it's more annoying

At the very least, Criterion has been increasing the amount of releases each month, which leaves room for more new titles to get included along with all these 4K upgrades. It's still a frustrating situation, but I'm glad they're pushing themselves to get more films out there.

yes, while not a single one was up my alley, I was still glad to see the 7 releases kept up with the October announcements. definitely makes it much easier to stomach

Per the newest Deaf Crocodile podcast, apparently they tried to get ahold of Allegro non Troppo and were told another company had the rights to release it and given that it’s yet to be released after what’s implied to be a very long time of the company having the rights to it, I think it’s easy to deduce that Criterion is the most likely candidate for who has the film.

They implied the company had the rights to the film for a number of years but still hasn’t released it and that said company would have to be a very powerful company to stronghold the film for that long. Also iirc, Allegro non Troppo was seen a while back as comparable to Fantastic Planet in how much it was sought after as a piece of jaw dropping world animation, so that would definitely be a contributing factor to why Criterion would want it in the first place.

I thought that Allegro non Troppo was one of the Janus titles that HVe released but I looked at an ebay listing and it wasn't. Which got me wondering if anyone has a list of Janus titles that HVe released?

Allegro Non Troppo is a natural fit for Criterion & I thought I remember something indicating more than wishful thinking at the time Fantastic Planet was announced but can't find it offhand. Hopefully a complete Laloux box is in the works. I think there was also something on Plague Dogs before or around Watership Down being released. I also remember speculation about a Ghibli title that Disney wouldn't release (Grave Of The Fireflies? but it ended up getting released). When The Wind Blows got released so that's no longer a possibility. Akira and Ghost In The Shell have been on the channel (but in poor encodes), so maybe fans can still hope for a proper release of these when their current editions go oop (though whether such a Criterion release would actually meet fan expectations is another matter). But I think the most likely animation we are to see next from Criterion (outside of the Laloux) would be a Suzann Pitt shorts collection as they have been on the channel for a while & open with the crazy C.

considering Fantasia is my favorite Disney movie, I obviously really want to see Allegro Non Troppo. Shout released The Plague Dogs (too dark for Criterion?) and I'd be surprised if they did Akira or Ghost in the Shell - I know Akira was a laserdisc title but Criterion definitely seem to be off the block with anime, GKids and Funimation seem to have that market covered, and do a great job with it

personally wish Criterion would release a John and Faith Hubley collection and even bothered their daughter Georgia about it in the past...that would definitely be my vote for them on the animation front, though maybe a 4K of The Triplets of Belville?

Yes, I know. I just thought HVe had licensed it from Janus (like Pale Flower, the Zatoichis, Fall Guy, etc.) and they didn't.

I think it's a few years since Bruno Bozzetto announced that he had partnered with Minerva Pictures to release his films in Italy and North America, specifically saying that it would lead to streaming and Blu-Ray releases.

Which I thought was curious because I didn't think that Minerva had a North American physical distribution arm, so whether they have sub-licensed or the wait is for them to set one up...
