Yeah, a picture of Heather Graham is never a bad cover

Listen, I'm as smitten as anyone when it comes to Heather Graham, but thems some weird ass covers. The standard just looks like a production still, and not meant for promotion. The randy illustration on the other hand doesn't even resemble her.yoloswegmaster wrote: Tue Oct 07, 2025 4:08 pm Boogie Nights 4K will be released in December. Haha is it ever a picture of a good actress, though? I guess she was alright in Twin Peaks, but i've never seen her actually prove herself in anything.therewillbeblus wrote: Tue Oct 07, 2025 8:05 pm Yeah, a picture of Heather Graham is never a bad cover

I don't know if she's gone above and beyond to "prove herself" as a masterclass thespian or anything, but I think she's been legit good in everything I've seen her in, including crumby comedies where she elevates the material as best she canRandall Maysin Again wrote: Tue Oct 07, 2025 9:09 pm Haha is it ever a picture of a good actress, though? Re: Worst DVD Covers...ever! (Part 4K)
I remember thinking she was kinda stinky and inadequate in Drugstore Cowboy. I guess that's the basis for my judgment. I think, maybe, this chat we're having raises the question I've pondered a bit, namely that, is there ever any real glory for an actor/ess in playing a complete idiot, no matter how "well" they do it? I was also thinking this in regard to Clooney's performances for the Coens, which I used to have the highest regard for, and now I just don't know what to think + it sort of seems like the Coens are being extremely patronizing to him...i mean, I guess! Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I just revisited There Will Be Blood, where Paul Dano is a pretty big idiot giving one of my favorite performances. I don't think this is exactly what you're talking about but still
I think Clooney is a fine idiot, but Brad Pitt kills it in Burn After Reading

Really? I've heard this from it seems like a fair number of people, and I don't really see it. I mean he's decent, he gets his laughs, but everyone else in that film is such a masterful old pro, even seemingly the bit parts who all make me think they're old friends of the Coens, while I remember Brad Pitt sort of chasing after effects rather than masterfully embodying them like every other cast member. I've actually never been impressed by him--with the massive exceptions of his two performances for Tarantino.

the Boogie Nights covers both feel kinda tasteless to me. not to mention the steelbook one most reminds me of the Licorice Pizza soundtrack cover. may be an intentional link, but prefer the idea of the twoovies standing up separately
add me to the chorus of people hoping Criterion does end up with some of the other big Warner titles, for artwork reasons at the very minimum

I will stick to my two disc DVD digipak for Boogie Nights just for the packaging. That new cover is atrocious. Or maybe buy the 4K disc and put it in there.

Yeah, those covers suck. The artwork from the Criterion LD and the special edition DVD is the way to go and they blew it.

I kinda understand what they're going for here... but the fact that they left the background
completely white makes the whole design look strange. Doesn't look much like Aykroyd, either.

Really? I like it (the film itself sucks though).

It's based on an actual poster for the film.JSC wrote: Wed Oct 15, 2025 2:47 pm I kinda understand what they're going for here... but the fact that they left the background

It does look much better in the nearer-to-scale form. The UHD cover would make me think it's about a pair of singing giants terrorizing a junkyard

Background aside, going from 1 car to multiple weirdly piled-up cars is the problematic difference to me. They look like cardboard cut-outs when "assembled" like this.

Did they accidentally leave the cover art in the pocket of their jeans before doing laundry?

It is pretty amazing how consistently awful Shout's steelbook art has been. (The Darkman UHD steelbook is the only good one that comes to mind and that is just the original teaser poster.)

It seems like its about a third of the way towards being a finished product, like it was intended to be zany but they forgot the zaniness. It's kind of bizarre.

Is 'play the flute' some sort of obscure aphorism that just passed me by?

Biblical reference (Matthew 11). This is, of course, a crummy cheap Christian film.JSC wrote: Wed Nov 12, 2025 5:15 pm Is 'play the flute' some sort of obscure aphorism that just passed me by?

I was going to express shock that Loretta Swit was still alive but she’s not so in conclusion I guess I really played the flute on that one
