We can expect Carlotta to issue a second volume of Naruse, given past example of their multiple Ozu sets. The problem remains that most Naruse films are poorly restored even at the HD level. To think gorgeous 'Scope films like Yearning and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs were presented like that by Toho it is really insulting. Hope Carlotta could move mountains at their headquarters.

A bunch of Carlotta releases are 50% off on Potemkine's site. That Truffaut 5 Heroines UHD set is awfully tempting at ~30 euros.

The Hitchcock set is only 40 Euros too, which may be very cost-effective for those who want to fill in gaps with the Imprint Hitchcock 9 and other releases. Imprint Hitchcock 9 + Carlotta Hitchcock give you everything released in HD up until 1932, then my existing Criterions, Network etc releases go from there.

Specifically, for Tsai: What Time Is It There?

This is my favorite Tsai Ming-liang film, would love an English friendly UHD but would settle for a decent blu (also can't remember if it was digital, so maybe blu is good enough?).

I Don't Want to Sleep Alone has, if I recall correctly, very little dialogue, even for a Tsai film. The other two I wouldn't want to watch without subtitles, but for Tsai I kind of feel like anything at all is a blessing.

Stray Dogs was Tsai’s first digitally shot feature length film.
As much as I love his work, I have a hard time imagining any film of his getting released on UHD, though he’s the sort of filmmaker who’d probably benefit from it a lot. Despite the marketing hype around COLOUR, MOTION & SOUND that always seem to accompany the industry’s move to the next home video format, I find it’s films that are visually far slower paced are the ones that gain the most, the closer discs come to replicating the look of film.

That said, would love to see all of his films languishing on OOP DVDs get an upgrade, especially The Hole & What Time Is It There?

Great news re. the Stair titles. 4K or standard BD, I'm loving it. I Don't Want to Sleep Alone, especially, has always looked terrible. What Time is maybe my all time favorite of his, so that's indeed awesome news.

With regars to The Hole that some of your are mentioning, Big World Pictures is actually a new restoration of it in the States right now. They did that with Rebels of the Neon God which recieved a blu-ray release after the run. This probably will as well?

For the US, probably a small label like Film Movement or Big World Pictures (who have both released Tsai films on Blu-ray) or The Film Desk (who released Trouble Every Day on Blu-ray). In the UK, I could see easily Masters of Cinema (or possibly Second Run) doing Tsai films.

I'd prefer for the Tsai films to go to someone other than Film Movement given their discs' inconsistent encode quality (I have their Vive l'amour but still haven't watched the actual disc), though I'll take whatever we get. The Wayward Cloud is one of my all-time favourites and the old DVD doesn't do justice to what the print looks like (saw it twice last year during Metrograph's Lee Kang-sheng retrospective, on a stunning print brought over from the Taiwan Film Institute). Would love to get Tsai on UHD, I remember seeing that The Wayward Cloud was restored in full 4K a couple years ago, but who knows how viable it'd be for these smaller labels. As mentioned by others, Big World in the US just released a beautiful new 35mm print of The Hole (which is a lot better than the old print that was around before, I think originally done by Fox Lorber?), so hopefully a Blu-ray follows. Though the print appears to be entirely photochemical so that release might not correspond to a digital upgrade.

Good news on the Claire Denis films as well, though would 35 Rhums even be a 4K upgrade anyway? I recall seeing something in the credits about a 2K digital intermediate, except White Material the following year had a cut negative. I've seen prints of both over the last few months and the latter looks much better, so I wouldn't be surprised if 35 Rhums was a DI.

Ecstatic about the Pola X news, hopefully the Carlotta release will sneak in English subtitles, though if not, there are labels in the US or UK who could do it (it was on Radiance's failed licenses last year).

Radiance might be interested in Angelopoulos and I'd actually think them more likely to release Tsai than Masters of Cinema since they've released Asian arthouse a lot more frequently lately by comparison. I'd really like to see What Time Is It There? so hopefully someone releases it in the UK or US. Anyone but Film Movement. My heart sinks a little every time a good film gets released by a partner label only to find out it's Film Movement.
